Plot Summary

Meet our main character, Kadir, portrayed by Asante Blackk. He’s a high school student dealing with the tragic loss of his brother, a loss that has left both him and his grieving mother struggling to find their way through the darkness. Unfortunately, Kadir’s mother isn’t quite equipped to provide the support he needs during this challenging time.

With the absence of a strong parental figure, Kadir, who possesses remarkable artistic talent (especially when it comes to drawing pictures of his late brother), finds himself facing an unexpected test. Skemes, the leader of a graffiti crew, steps into Kadir’s life and presents him with a daunting choice: commit a robbery.

However, things take an unexpected turn when Kadir singles out an M.T.A. worker named Luis, played by Luis Guzmán, on a desolate subway platform. Instead of confronting him, Luis surprises Kadir by inviting him to join him for Cuban sandwiches at a nearby spot. During this encounter, Luis skillfully negotiates with Kadir, persuading him to give up the gun he’s carrying. What unfolds next are the most compelling and genuinely acted moments in the film. In fact, the film’s director, Aristotle Torres, claimed, “In making this film, I sought to change the perception around graffiti culture being all about unbridled vandalism by vagrants. That isn’t accurate. There is a hierarchy, a philosophy, and rules to follow in the sphere of graf.”

As shown throughout the film, graffiti culture can go hand-in-hand with gang culture. Graffiti culture in the Bronx, particularly during the 1970s, was a vibrant and complex movement that played a significant role in the borough’s history. Emerging against a backdrop of socioeconomic challenges and urban decay, graffiti served as a form of artistic expression and a means of reclaiming neglected public spaces. Bronx graffiti artists, or “writers,” developed distinctive styles characterized by colorful, intricate lettering and imaginative designs. Subway trains became their primary canvas, and “bombing” involved covering subway cars with graffiti art.
