New York $200 POWER rebate checks are on the way as Americans urged to watch their mailboxes

Millions of New Yorkers are getting some help with their utility bills, but anyone waiting for money to suddenly appear in a bank account could be looking in the wrong place. New York’s new POWER rebate checks worth up to $200 begin going out September 21, and the money is being sent through the mail.

Your $200 may simply not be there yet

The state is distributing about $1 billion in energy relief to more than 8 million New Yorkers, but the checks are not all being mailed at once. Deliveries will continue through December, and the Tax Department specifically warns that your neighbor receiving a check before you does not mean yours is missing. Mailings are not organized by ZIP code or region.

That makes checking the mailbox important over the coming weeks. Eligible residents do not need to apply, submit utility bills or register for the payment. New York will determine eligibility automatically using information from 2024 state income tax returns.

Not everyone is getting $200

The full $200 goes to married couples filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouses with New York adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less. Joint filers earning more than $150,000 but no more than $300,000 receive $150, while eligible single, head-of-household and married-filing-separately taxpayers earning $150,000 or less receive $100.

There are other requirements. You needed to file a 2024 New York resident income tax return on time, fall within the income limits and not have been claimed as someone else’s dependent. The state considers a return timely if it was filed by April 15, 2025, or by October 15 under a valid extension.

Still no check? December matters more than September

For now, not receiving a check is not evidence that something went wrong. New York says it cannot provide individual delivery schedules, and even its Contact Center will not have information about when a particular check will arrive. So if you qualify and your mailbox is still empty, the important detail is the calendar: the first checks are only starting to move, and New Yorkers could be waiting until December for theirs to arrive.
