New York City is bringing back one of its most iconic summer spots with major upgrades and free entry
  • The legendary Astoria Pool in Queens, NYC’s largest outdoor public swimming facility, officially reopens on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

  • Following a major USD 19 million municipal overhaul, the complex debuts top tier filtration, lining and lighting systems.

  • Admission remains 100% free for all ages, operating in two daily shifts separated by a mandatory sanitization window.

As the summer heat begins to settle over the metropolitan area, New York City is ready to welcome back one of its most vital and historic recreational treasures. Following an extensive closure for structural upgrades, the Astoria Park Pool, officially recognized as the largest outdoor public pool within the city’s park system, will permanently reopen to the public on Saturday, June 27, 2026. This highly anticipated return breathes new life into the Queens community, restoring a massive, cost free cooling sanctuary at a time when climate driven heat waves are becoming an annual challenge for city dwellers.

A USD 19 million modernization anchoring historical Art Deco charm

The comprehensive restoration project injected roughly USD 19 millones into the facility under the umbrella of the city’s Let’s Swim NYC framework, a capital plan spearheaded by Mayor Eric Adams to invest over USD 1 billion across five fiscal years to fortify public aquatics. Originally opened in 1936, the historic 100 meter Astoria Pool received a brand new 55,000 square foot waterproof lining, fully overhauled mechanical filtration and chemical treatment operations and modernized lighting and ventilation systems. Crucially, engineering teams successfully preserved the structural Art Deco and Art Moderne craftsmanship that has defined the complex for generations.

Operational logistics: daily hours, free access and cleaning protocols

Managed directly by NYC Parks (the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation), the facility will enforce a strict double shift daily schedule to guarantee optimal water quality and safety standards. Daily access is split into two distinct swimming sessions, separated by a mandatory one hour maintenance window dedicated entirely to deep cleaning and disinfection. Bathers can access the complex at 19th St. and 23rd Dr. in Astoria and park officials advise visitors to monitor official digital channels for any real-time adjustments tied to severe weather events.

  • Season Opener: Saturday, June 27, 2026.

  • Morning Session: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

  • Sanitization Break: 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

  • Afternoon Session: 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

  • Admission Cost: Free entry for all age demographics.

A Queens crown jewel showcasing unbeatable Manhattan views

Astoria Pool’s standing within New York’s network of 53 outdoor public pools is unmatched: stretching an incredible 328 feet in length with a concurrent capacity for 3,000 swimmers, the facility welcomed over 100,000 visitors during its 2022 campaign alone. Its breathtaking geographic footprint in Queens, framed beautifully by the RFK Triborough and Hell Gate bridges, treats guests to sweeping vistas of the East River and the iconic Manhattan skyline. The highly anticipated launch aligns perfectly with surrounding park improvements along the Great Lawn trails, which now feature new paving, public benches, and game tables.
