Meet Mr B Baby the Latina artist turning heads with her powerful LA murals

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through the power of public art, Mexican American and Puerto Rican muralist Michelle Guerrero, professionally known as Mr B Baby, unveiled her newest large scale creation in East Los Angeles. Installed at Las Fotos Project, a Boyle Heights non profit organization dedicated to empowering young women and non binary artists of color through photography and visual storytelling, the vibrant mural titled “El Mar Recibe Todo” was brought to life in partnership with Selena Gomez and her brand Rare Beauty. The artwork serves as an uplifting testament to cultural pride, shared human experiences and community connection.

Interpreting the proverb “El Mar Recibe Todo”

The mural’s creative vision centers around the traditional Spanish proverb “El mar recibe todos los ríos” (The sea receives all rivers), which anchors this year’s “RareConsejo” campaign designed by Rare Beauty’s Latina team members. Guerrero translated the concept into a rich visual landscape featuring a central female figure representing the inner child and her foundational aspirations. Flowing around her is a symbolic river depicting the diverse life paths, unexpected turns and personal connections that individuals experience, reflecting how unique personal journeys ultimately merge into a collective community identity.

Border upbringing and resilient iconography

Raised in Chula Vista, California, near the United States-Mexico border, Guerrero drew heavily from her bilingual upbringing and mixed heritage to forge a distinct aesthetic. Blending vibrant Mexican folk art elements with tropical Caribbean color palettes, her portfolio includes over 150 monumental murals executed worldwide, earning her an official “Mr B Baby Day” proclamation in her hometown every March 5. Central to her iconography is “Chucho,” a piñata character whose cracked exterior sprouts colorful flowers, serving as an enduring symbol of emotional healing and personal resilience.

A celebration of Latino heritage and belonging

The project resonated deeply with Rare Beauty founder Selena Gomez, who emphasized the importance of cultural unity in supporting the initiative. “One of my favorite things about being Latina is our incredible sense of community,” Gomez noted regarding the collaboration. “There is always that feeling of connection and belonging. This mural reflects that feeling in a space designed to bring people together.” Located at 2210 E. Cesar E. Chavez Ave in Los Angeles, the public installation stands as an inspiring monument to artistic expression and cultural representation.
