  • Hawthorne native Omar Banos built a global fan base starting with homemade loops and Ableton software.

  • The multi instrumentalist relies on rigorous studio iteration and live testing to refine his sound.

  • Inspirations ranging from Tame Impala to System of a Down fuel his emotional, cross genre songwriting.

Born Omar Banos in 1998, the California multi instrumentalist known as Cuco has shaped one of the most remarkable career trajectories in modern alternative music. Raised in Hawthorne, a city renowned for breeding legendary musical talent, Cuco began his journey in the quiet solitude of his childhood bedroom. Mastering several instruments before age 15, he eventually picked up Ableton Live software to construct delicate melodies that quickly captivated internet audiences. What originated as a personal outlet for an introverted teenager soon evolved into a cultural phenomenon with millions of dedicated streaming fans worldwide.

Methodical studio craftsmanship and artistic evolution

Following the viral success of his early covers and the release of his breakout 2016 mixtape Wannabewithu, Cuco signed with Interscope Records to release his debut full length album Para Mi in 2019, later followed by Fantasy Gateway in 2022. Rather than resting on his initial success, the 26 year old artist continuously pushes himself outside his comfort zone by blending romantic pop, bossa nova, electronica and ethereal psychedelia. His recording method is deeply meticulous, often requiring him to rerecord vocal tracks and instrumental arrangements over half a dozen times until the production satisfies his high artistic standards.

The live concert environment as a creative testing ground

Far from being purely a studio musician, Cuco views live performances as an essential laboratory for testing new ideas and evaluating how audiences respond to unreleased material. He frequently introduces works in progress to concert crowds, allowing the energy of the venue to dictate how the arrangements develop before taking them back into the studio. This commitment to delivering powerful live experiences was heavily inspired by attending a System of a Down concert, an event that reinforced his desire to evoke raw, unforgettable emotional reactions from every crowd he encounters.

High profile collaborations and a lasting musical legacy

In addition to his celebrated solo discography, including his benchmark 2023 EP Hitchhiker, Cuco has dedicated significant creative energy toward collaborative projects with international talent. Recent work alongside Asian hip hop collective 1999 Write The Future, British Jamaican artist Lava La Rue and Panamanian singer songwriter Sofia Valdés highlights his adaptability as a producer who honors his partners’ artistic visions while infusing his signature sonic warmth. Ultimately, Cuco remains committed to creating comforting, accessible music that ensures his listeners never feel alone in their personal journeys.
