Amazon’s next big move with nuclear power and nothing to do with packages in Indiana
  • Amazon partnered with energy innovators to construct a nine hundred sixty megawatt nuclear power facility.

  • The modern installation will deploy twelve small modular reactors located on former industrial coal property.

  • Generated carbon free electricity will supply regional public utility networks alongside artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Addressing the unprecedented electrical power demands generated by global artificial intelligence computation networks, technology giant Amazon has finalized a landmark partnership to establish a massive nuclear power generation facility in Indiana. Partnering alongside nuclear design innovator X energy and utility provider American Electric Power, the enterprise agreed to finance the development of a nine hundred sixty megawatt facility utilizing small modular reactor technology, serving as both a primary corporate investor and anchor energy consumer for the clean energy installation.

Advanced modular reactor design and public utility grid integration

The commercial project foresees placing twelve Xe 100 small modular reactors across the historical site of the former Breed Generating Station coal plant located within Sullivan County. Utilizing helium cooling methods alongside specialized TRISO nuclear fuel, the modern reactor architecture incorporates passive physical safety principles that prevent core meltdowns without requiring active human intervention or emergency electrical pumps. Unlike isolated corporate power arrangements, the facility will connect directly to the regional public grid, supporting local municipal energy reliability while creating over one thousand construction jobs.

Regulatory oversight hurdles and long term commercial timelines

While Amazon continues allocating billions of dollars toward clean energy investments to establish five gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2039, deploying unproven small modular reactor technology requires navigating strict regulatory approval frameworks. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission must conduct extensive site specific safety evaluations before construction permits are granted. Consequently, industry analysts anticipate initial site preparation commencing near the end of the current decade, with full operational capacity projected for the mid 2030s.
