Netflix Binge-Watch Holiday Edition: Here’s What’s in Store

Netflix has announced its long-awaited list of new arrivals for December, the last month of the year. New movies, series, and new and final seasons are dropping on the platform, and, as usual, LATV has put together a compilation of some of these productions to add to your must-watch list.

May December – December 1st

Todd Haynes is the director behind this disarming drama film, headlined by the talented Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.

The film is loosely based on the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, who began a sexual relationship when Letourneau was a teacher in her thirties and Fualaau was a twelve-year-old student. The movie follows Elizabeth (Portman), a television actor, as she prepares for the role of Gracie (Moore) in a film about the infamous tabloid romance. As Elizabeth digs for inspiration, the past begins to invade the present, and long-forgotten feelings take center stage.

Leave the World Behind – December 8th

A big ensemble cast comes together for this new thriller adaptation from director Sam Esmail, based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam.

The movie stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, and Ethan Hawke, among others, and tells the story of two families fighting for survival amid an inexplicable blackout. The plot revolves around a family vacation on Long Island that is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout. As the threat grows more imminent, both families are forced to confront their true feelings about race and class as the world burns around them.

Grand Theft Auto Trilogy – December 14th

Netflix is set to release Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for its members on the App Store, Google Play, and the Netflix mobile app. The package includes three iconic titles from the famous franchise: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, each updated for mobile gameplay.

The games will be available without ads, in-app purchases, or extra fees, and can be pre-registered for early access. The addition of the GTA titles to Netflix’s library marks the first time the streaming service has significantly expanded its gaming offerings, which currently consist of around 80 iOS and Android games.

The Crown (Season 6 – Part 2) – December 14th

The final season of the show that follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II will cover the period from 1997 to 2005, showcasing significant events such as Princess Diana’s death and funeral, Prince Charles and Camilla’s wedding, and Prince William’s time at the University of Saint Andrews, where he meets his future wife, Kate Middleton.

The first four episodes of season six, part one, revolve around Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed’s relationship and tragic deaths in Paris, while the final six episodes of part two are expected to delve into the more modern version of the royal family, including the romance between Prince William and Kate Middleton. The final season will feature the usual suspects, including the Queen, Prince Charles, Camilla, and Harry, and the introduction of new characters such as Kate Middleton, played by Meg Bellamy, and Prince William, played by Ed McVey.

Money Heist: Berlin – December 29th

Berlin is a beloved fictional character in the popular Netflix series Money Heist, portrayed by Pedro Alonso. He is a terminally ill grand larcenist, jewel thief, and cracksman, as well as the Professor’s second-in-command and brother.

The upcoming Netflix show, BERLIN, is a spin-off centered around the character Berlin, long before he finds out about his terminal diagnosis and takes the Royal Mint of Spain hostage. The series will focus on an earlier period in Berlin’s life, showing his golden age as he attempts one of his most extraordinary heists, including his time in Paris where he and a gang assembled for one of his greatest plans ever: stealing 44 million euros’ worth of jewels in one night.
