Why You Should Watch Oscar-Nominated Film “Society Of The Snow”

The real-life story of Society of the Snow

In 1972, tragedy struck South America when a Uruguayan airplane carrying a total of 40 passengers, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby union team and five of its crew members, on board crashed in the Andes mountains, the border between Argentina and Chile. Twelve people died immediately and several more succumbed soon after, leaving 16 to survive for 72 days in the frigid cold and resort to cannibalism.

The Spanish and South American Contender For The Oscars

Fifty one years after this tragic event, Netflix has released a heart-wrenching yet gripping film that chronicles the harrowing days that the rugby players and their families went through. The movie, titled “Society of the Snow,” features real survivors from the incident and has been a massive success since its release. In just three days it accumulated a whopping 22,9000 views and a total of 55,800,000 hours watched, and eleven days later it entered the list of the 10 most viewed non-English speaking films in the streaming platform’s history.

But it doesn’t end there. The movie has also been nominated for the Academy Awards in the Best International Film category, along with a nod for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Directed by Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona and starring Enzo Vogrincic, Agustín Pardella, and Matías Recalt, among others, “Society of the Snow” narrates the true events from the survivors’ perspective, depicting their greatest challenges, mental struggles, and the extreme measures they had to take to survive. The result is a poignant, brutal, tragic, yet inspiring story.

It is not the first time this incredible survival story has been brought to the screen; “Alive,” starring Ethan Hawke, was released in 1993, with mixed reviews, mostly due to its sensationalist nature and the inaccuracy of some of the events portrayed. Bayone wanted to make sure that his retelling was as accurate as possible. It was filmed in the Andes mountains instead of a studio, and the real life survivors gave the actors insights into each character they played, with some even appearing in small cameos throughout the movie. The cast went as far as to lose 22 pounds to fulfill their role and specific medical details were incorporated to authentically represent the victims’ experience.

The tragedy that inspires hope, love, and the human spirit

“Society of the Snow” also stands out for its emotional depth. Bayona presents the survivors as individuals who had to make difficult decisions, sticking together to survive, and finding the strength and motivation to continue living despite their physical and emotional deterioration.

The actors’ outstanding performances have made viewers around the world admire and empathize with the characters, feeling their pain and reliving their struggles as if they were right there with them in the Andes with them. Expect to shed some tears throughout the length of the movie, as “Society of the Snow” may focus on tragedy and despair, but its ultimate poignant lesson highlights the enduring power of love, friendship, and the human spirit.
