Liga MX explains why three quarterfinal matches will be played on the same day

The Liga MX quarterfinals are set, but this year’s schedule comes with an unusual twist. The league confirmed the dates and kickoff times for the Apertura 2025, and one detail immediately stood out: three matches will be played on Wednesday, and three more on Saturday.

This isn’t a mistake, it’s a security move.

Why the league changed the schedule

Mexico City’s Secretariat of Citizen Security asked Liga MX not to schedule Cruz Azul vs Chivas and América vs Monterrey on the same day. Both games attract huge crowds, and running them together would demand more security forces than the city could safely deploy.

Because of that request, the league created a special schedule that helps:

  • manage security operations

  • allocate enough police and support staff

  • control the large flow of fans in the city

Cruz Azul’s choice shaped the final calendar

Cruz Azul finished the regular season above América, so they had priority to choose their home date. They selected Sunday, which forced América vs Monterrey to move to Saturday.

Toluca and Tigres had already selected Saturday for their second legs. That decision created a domino effect: three quarterfinal matches ended up scheduled for the same day.

Liga MX also noted that article 17 of the 2025–26 competition regulations allows the league to adjust match days when “extraordinary conditions” arise, such as government security recommendations.
