Revolutionizing Birth: The Unique journey of the Los Angeles Midwives

Lindsay Adams, a Certified Nurse Midwife from Los Angeles Midwives, recently stopped by LATV to chat with Esencia: Latina Wellness about a new perspective on pregnancy and childbirth. The conversation unveiled this practice’s unique approach to offering women an empowering experience through both home and hospital births. The Los Angeles Midwives, founded by Naomi Drucker and Lilit B. Sarkissian in 2020, stand out as pioneers in the field, being the first midwifery team granted the privilege to deliver babies at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Exclusive Interview with Lindsay Adams from Los Angeles Midwives

Adams, one of the three dedicated providers at Los Angeles Midwives, shared insights into their distinctive model of care. “We do home births and we offer hospital deliveries,” she explained. “If you are planning a home birth and things start to happen, like high blood pressure, if we make that decision together, then we are going to transfer to the hospital, but we don’t give up care. We continue to be your provider, the way a doctor would be if you checked into the hospital. So we are there with you, we see you through the birth, we check in with you after the delivery, and we are there to be the buffer between you and the hospital system.”

The interview also touched on the distinction between a Certified Nurse Midwife and a Certified Midwife, emphasizing the empowering nature of midwifery. Adams highlighted the benefits of trusting the natural birthing process rather than viewing it purely as a medical procedure, challenging the perception that elective C-sections are often chosen out of fear. She expressed, “I think some of it is fear of childbirth. Very few children are in the hospital unless they’re the patient. Birth is not like how it is in the TV and the movies. It can be on the rare occasion where it goes fast and dramatic, but on the whole, no, it’s all dramatized for sure.”

Los Angeles Midwives

The Los Angeles Midwives, comprising advanced practice Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), envision birth as a normal physiologic and developmental process. Drucker and Sarkissian advocate for non-intervention in the absence of complications and strive to empower women as partners in healthcare.

The practice recognizes menarche, pregnancy, birth, and menopause as natural processes, incorporating scientific evidence into clinical practice. They advocate for informed choice, shared decision-making, and the right to self-determination. Whether at home or in the hospital, with or without interventions, the aim of the Los Angeles Midwives is to create positive and personalized birthing memories for each woman.

Lindsay Adams, driven by a passion for the sciences and biology since childhood, found inspiration in her own positive midwifery care during pregnancy. Her decade-long career journey included her standing in as a surrogate, facing healthcare challenges, and working as a labor and delivery nurse at Cedars-Sinai, setting the standard for the kind of nurse and midwife she aspired to become. Adams expressed excitement and honor at joining the Los Angeles Midwives team in 2022, after a decade of learning, adventures, and dedicated pursuit of her midwifery dreams.
