Meet the cast of Netflix’s Vicente Fernandez “El Rey” series 

The Netflix series based on the life and career of Mexican singer Vicente Fernandez reached number 1 on the streaming platform on the week of September 19th to September 25th, with over 33 million hours watched. The 33 episodes that make up the series go back and forth over the life of Vicente Fernandez, from his childhood where he already knew he wanted to be a singer, to when he was already famous, the role of his wife, Refugio Abarca, who he met when she was just 17 and the impact she had on his success. 

So what has made this Netflix series such a smashing success? Well, one reason of course could be that not only does it dig deep into the life of one of the world’s most renown mariachi, but it also lets you travel to the past, as it mostly takes place in the 1950’s. The cast also plays a very important role in the series’ success, so let’s dive in and get to know a little bit about them.

Jaime Camil (Vicente Fernández)

Jaime Federico Said Camil de Saldanha da Gama was born in Mexico in 1973, to Jaime Camil Garza, a Mexican businessman with Egyptian heritage, and Cecilia Saldanha da Gama, a Brazilian singer. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, but decided to study acting in New York, Los Angeles, and Mexico. He played Fernando Mendiola in “La Fea Más Bella” and Rogelio de la Vega in “Jane the Virgin”. This show brought him two nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Sebastián Dante (Young Vicente Fernández)

This 26 years old actor (born in 1995 in Mexico) studied in the National School of Theater and ventured into the world of telenovelas in 2009. He’s also been in several important plays and some movies. His other abilities include the use of a whip in a circus act and he’s experienced in scenic combat. As if that weren’t enough, he also plays the guitar. 

Sebastián García (Teen Vicente Fernández)

Sebastián García Huerta was born in México City and started his career in 2019 as a voice actor. He’s offered his voice to Alex, the lion in “Madagascar”, and to Disney’s “Greg’s Diary”, and “Journey to the Center of the Earth”. He’s also a dancer as well. When talking about the “El Rey, Vicente Fernández” series, he said that it has been “a great project in which I had the honor of playing a great idol of Mexico. Don Vicente Fernández. I met great people, had great challenges and above all many lessons”.

Kaled Acab (Child Vicente Fernández)

This 11 year old actor has already been part of some important Mexican series and TV commercials. He’s also played the son of Chuy (Mauricio Ochmann) in the movie “Reviviendo la Navidad” (Reliving Christmas), which will be available on Netflix in December. Many viewers of “El Rey” have fallen in love with his cute impersonation of the Mexican singer as a kid. 

Marcela Guirado (Vicente Fernández’ wife, Refugio Abarca, known as Doña Cuquita)

Born in 1989 in Guadalajara, Jalisco (México), she was interested in acting from a very young age. By the age of 12 she was already in the cast of school plays, and when she grew up she acted in many series- including one of the life of Mexican singer Selena- telenovelas and movies. But her big break came when she played Verónica Castro in Netflix’s Luis Miguel biopic. 

Regina Pavón (young Refugio)

This Mexican model and actress is known for being one of the protagonists of the movie “No manches Frida”, but was also part of the cast of several Netflix series, such as Dark Desire and Monarca. She was born in Mexico City in 1998. In “El Rey, Vicente Fernández” she portrays his young wife before he became famous. She´s stated that one of the biggest challenges of her role was being true to past times.  

Enoc Leaño (Vicente’s father)

He was born in Baja California Sur (Mexico) in 1968. Since 1992, he has built an extensive trajectory in movies, tv and telenovelas. He’s also a writer and producer. An interesting note: in 1999 he founded with his wife, director Cristina Michaus, a civil organization, where they’ve produced plays, documentaries and social movie shorts. 

Marissa Saavedra (Vicente’s mother)

This renowned actress and singer has a vast trajectory in theater and cabaret. She acted in the series “Paquita la del barrio” and in a few movies, such as Cantinflas. 

Raúl Sandoval (Felipe Arriaga)

Mexican actor and singer Edwin Raúl Sandoval de la Torre was one of the participants in the first generation of La Academia (the Mexican version of American Idol). In “El Rey”, he plays Vicente Fernández’ best friend, Chucho, who helped the singer and his family when they arrived at Mexico City.  

Erick Chapa (Tico Mendoza)

The actor, born in Mexico City in 1985, plays a music producer who was a close friend of Vicente Fernández and helped him create the song “Volver volver”, which became one of El Rey’s hits. Tico Mendoza- Federico Méndez in real life- also wrote “¿De qué manera te olvido?”, another one of the famous mariachi’s most successful songs.
