“Money isn’t the priority”: Hormiga González reveals why he chose Olympiacos
  • The Mexican striker prioritizes athletic growth over financial gain as he embarks on his European journey.

  • A former Liga MX top scorer and 2026 World Cup participant, he leaves Chivas with 29 career goals.

  • His primary long term objective with the Greek giants is to compete in the UEFA Champions League.

Mexican striker Armando “Hormiga” González boarded a flight to Europe this August 20 to finalize his transfer to Greek club Olympiacos, explicitly stating that his career move is driven by athletic development rather than financial incentive. At 23 years old, the former Guadalajara forward departs North America as one of the most promising talents in Mexican football. Prior to his departure, the player emphasized that joining the most decorated team in Greece represents the ideal stepping stone to elevate his game on the international stage while holding onto the long term goal of eventually returning to his home country as a complete footballer.

A prolific goalscoring record that opened European doors

Born in Celaya, Guanajuato, González developed through the ranks at Tapatío in the lower divisions before earning his first team debut with Guadalajara in 2023. His explosive goalscoring ability quickly established him as a premier attacker, culminating in a joint top scorer title during the Apertura 2025 tournament alongside Paulinho and Joao Pedro. Across 69 official appearances for Chivas, he registered 29 goals and 4 assists, an impressive tally that caught the attention of national team head coach Javier Aguirre and earned him a spot in Mexico’s 2026 World Cup roster.

Choosing competitive prestige over monetary gain

The decision to sign with Olympiacos stems from the club’s rich history, passionate fanbase, and regular participation in European competitions. González noted that the opportunity to compete for silverware under high pressure environments outweighed any pecuniary advantages offered elsewhere. By choosing a club with a relentless winning culture, the young forward aims to refine his tactical maturity and physical presence against tough European defenders, fulfilling his personal ambition of testing his capabilities at the highest level.

European ambitions centered on Champions League football

Although Olympiacos will not feature in the UEFA Champions League during the upcoming campaign, competing in Europe’s elite tournament remains one of the striker’s childhood dreams. González reiterated his commitment to helping his new club secure domestic dominance to earn a qualification spot in future editions. The Mexican international views his transition to Greece as an essential developmental phase that will prepare him for the rigorous demands of top tier European football.
