Andrea Meza is 3rd Miss Mexico to be Crowned Miss Universe

Twenty-six-year-old Miss Mexico Andrea Meza was crowned Miss Universe 2020 this past weekend on May 16th at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Mario Lopez hosted the competition with Former Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo. During the crowning moment, Meza was on the stage with Miss Brazil, Julia Gama. Lopez announced “…and the winner of the 69th Miss Universe competition is…Viva Mexico!” Meza is the third Miss Mexico to be crowned in Miss Universe history. In 1991, Lupita Jones was the first Miss Mexico to be crowned Miss Universe. In 2010, Ximena Navarrete was the second Miss Mexico to be crowned as Miss Universe. Mexico’s President congratulated Meza for representing Mexico winning the competition. Jones shared a photo with Meza including the caption, “Congratulations Andrea Meza! You fought to achieve the dream that was with you as a girl, your discipline and talent took you to the place you occupied today at Miss Universe Viva Mexico!”

Born and raised in Chihuahua, before winning Miss Universe, Meza has always been proud of where she comes from – she was even a Chihuahua Tourism Ambassador. On Monday morning, the title of Miss Universe has officially begun for Meza, appearing on different TV shows for interviews and moving to New York City. Yesterday morning, Meza appeared on Good Morning America. During the interview, Meza shared that her dream to one day become Miss Universe began at age 15 when Ximena Navarrette won Miss Universe. Navarrette changed  Meza’s mindset about being Mexican and being able to earn a high position in society; however, she shared that she felt it was an impossible dream. As she got older, she also shared, “this was the path I needed to take in order to get out of my comfort zone and grow.” Meza has been participating in pageants for four years; she also competed in Miss World 2017. She was the first runner-up for Miss World.

During the Miss Universe competition, Miss Brazil, Dominican Republic, Peru and India were all selected to be a part of the top five and chose different topics to speak about. A fun fact about Meza is that she is 6 feet tall. Meza spoke about the topic of Beauty Standards,

“Beauty is not only the way we look. For me, Beauty radiates not only in our spirits, but in our hearts and the way we conduct ourselves. Never permit someone to tell you that you are not valuable.”

Meza’s followers grew to 1.7 million within 48 hours of being crowded. As Miss Universe, Meza is able to use her platform to speak about issues she cares about – one of which is to prevent gender violence. Also, she wants to bring awareness to the importance of women fighting for their rights. She shared on social media a photo of being crowned by former Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi with the caption,

“What a moment! Ready for this journey!”
