Who was Edwin Lopez Cornejo? ICE detainee who died at New Jersey detention center after medical

The 41-year-old Salvadoran immigrant had been held at Delaney Hall in Newark for less than two months when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said he suffered a medical emergency. His death is now under review, adding to growing scrutiny of conditions inside ICE detention facilities.

The death of Edwin Lopez-Cornejo has once again placed the spotlight on immigration detention in the United States.

The 41-year-old Salvadoran national died on August 1, days after experiencing what U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) described as a medical emergency while being held at Delaney Hall, a detention center in Newark, New Jersey. According to ICE, Lopez-Cornejo was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he was later pronounced dead. The agency has not publicly disclosed the cause of death, and reviews into the incident remain ongoing.

His death marks the 22nd reported death in ICE custody in 2026, according to agency data.

Who was Edwin Lopez-Cornejo?

Lopez-Cornejo was originally from El Salvador and first entered the United States in 2006.

According to his family, he had been working steadily since 2022 and was living in New Jersey before his arrest. His mother told local media that her son attempted to show immigration officers a valid work permit when he was taken into custody, but was detained nonetheless. ICE has not publicly commented on those claims.

He was arrested by ICE officers in Plainfield, New Jersey, on June 18 and transferred to Delaney Hall while awaiting immigration proceedings.

Less than two months later, he was dead.

What happened at Delaney Hall?

ICE has stated only that Lopez-Cornejo suffered a medical emergency inside the detention facility before being transported to the hospital.

The agency has not released additional details about the nature of that emergency, and no official cause of death had been announced as of Monday evening.

Under ICE policy, deaths that occur while someone is in agency custody are subject to internal review, and the agency is required to notify Congress, oversight authorities and the public.

A detention center already under scrutiny

Lopez-Cornejo’s death comes as Delaney Hall has faced increasing public attention over conditions inside the privately operated facility.

In recent months, detainees have staged hunger strikes and work stoppages while raising concerns about food quality, access to medical care and treatment by staff. Immigration advocates and civil rights organizations have also called for greater transparency regarding operations at the center.

Those concerns have fueled ongoing demonstrations outside the Newark facility throughout the summer.

Newark officials renew calls for accountability

Following ICE’s announcement, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka again called for Delaney Hall to be closed.

In a public statement, Baraka said the latest death reflected what he described as a continuing lack of transparency and oversight at the detention center. He argued that stronger accountability is needed to protect the health and safety of people held there.

ICE has not responded directly to the mayor’s criticism but has said it remains committed to providing comprehensive medical care to individuals in its custody.

A family searching for answers

For Lopez-Cornejo’s family, the news has been devastating.

His mother told local reporters she spoke with her son regularly after his detention but was unable to visit him because she is not a U.S. citizen. She also said his young daughter had struggled to cope after learning of his death.

While public debate over immigration enforcement continues, Lopez-Cornejo’s family says their immediate concern is understanding exactly what happened during his final days inside federal custody.

As federal reviews continue, many of the questions surrounding his death, including the official cause and the circumstances that led to the reported medical emergency, remain unanswered.
