However, instead of being the anthem of unity it aimed to be, the song has sparked critique over a troubling lyric that struck a sour chord with many listeners. The controversial lyric sung by Feid and Maluma goes: “A mamacita since she was fourteen / She enters the club and you can feel her energy / Mamasita, I take these shots for you.” While the term “mamasita” and the setting of a club may resonate in Latin music culture, the line has sparked concern over the suggested sexualization of minors.

Critics, including from Rolling Stone En Español, argued that a particular line in the song seemed to “perpetuate the sexualization of minors,” sparking a heated debate. Given her prominent role in promoting the collaboration as its sole female artist, Karol G faced considerable backlash, with some accusing her of supporting lyrics that were seen as distasteful.

Karol G’s apology

After several days without comment, Karol G t0ok the topic to her Instagram stories on November 11. Her message was one of frustration, acceptance of responsibility, and apology. Here’s what she shared in full:

“I’m always grateful to everyone who follows and supports me. You know my projects, the intentions behind my work, and the causes close to my heart—the ones that drive me and that I passionately work for every single day with love and responsibility. I truly care about my community, and I’m someone who actively seeks to get involved in initiatives where I can lend a hand and have a positive impact on many people’s lives.

As artists, we’re always in the public eye, subject to the opinions of those who admire us as well as those who might not agree with our work. I’m deeply frustrated by the misinformation circulating, especially claims about tweets I’ve supposedly posted and deleted from an account I haven’t touched in over six months. Unfortunately, the lyrics in my song, which were meant to celebrate artist collaboration and get everyone dancing, were completely taken out of context. The song’s words were not intended in the way they’ve been interpreted. Even though that perspective wasn’t my intention, I hear the concerns, I take responsibility, and I acknowledge there’s still so much for me to learn. This has deeply affected me, and I sincerely apologize.

In her Instagram apology, Karol G addressed the rumors swirling around her. She clarified that she hadn’t even touched her Twitter account in the past six months, despite claims otherwise. Karol G felt that the controversy over the lyric from ‘+57’ was blown out of proportion, insisting it was never meant to be seen in a negative light. However, she accepted her duty as a public figure to be mindful of how her words might be interpreted by others. She wrapped up her statement with heartfelt thanks to her fans for their unwavering support and gave a shout-out to fellow artists like J Balvin and Feid who collaborated with her on the track.

The other collaborators didn’t stay quiet either. J Balvin, another prominent figure featured on the track, spoke out a few days earlier. He explained that the aim of the song was to craft something that put unity and talent in the spotlight—not stir controversy. He expressed gratitude to Karol G for making the song a reality and pointed out that the essence of the track was all about celebrating their musical collaboration without letting egos interfere.

J Balvin later shared Karol’s message with his fans to stand by her. “You’re a queen, and we’re with you all the way! You’ve given us so much, and this doesn’t affect how great you are. Plus, it’s our song too, so we’re here for you no matter what,” he wrote.

Feid, who is Karol G’s boyfriend and also a collaborator on the track, reposted her story adding, “My queen, let’s keep going!” Ovy on the Drums also chimed in with support, saying, “Always got your back, my G.”

DFZM, another artist participating in the track, weighed in on the issue through his social media. He shared a picture on his Instagram story along with a voice note, offering a direct perspective: if people weren’t fans of the track, they just didn’t have to play it.
