The Latina in Morbius + Movie Review

The Latina in Morbius + Movie Review

I have to say, even though I love superheroes (I have a few Wonder Woman and Spiderman shirts in my closet),  I’m not always impressed with superhero movies; I tend to find the characters too  cartoonish and I usually walk out of the theatre with many notes about it. So I didn’t have high hopes with Morbius, however, it surprised me for good.

Morbius follows a Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) who is going lengthy ways to find a cure for a chronic and rare blood illness that is affecting him and his childhood best friend Milo, (Matt Smith) with the help of Dr. Martine Bancroft (Adria Arjona) and a bunch of bats from Costa Rica. The bats are key for his experiment that as Dr.Morbius says, is “ethically questionable” but promising in finding a cure. The duo of doctors decide to give it a try in the middle of international waters and after Morbius gets a cocktail with bat’s DNA up and running, things go pretty bloody. He goes from a sick man to one with super powers. But at what cost? Eight dead men as a start. After seeing that he is going to need drink artificial or real human blood for the rest of life to make it, he realizes he has made a huge mistake but doesn’t know how to reverse it.

The movie, although predictable at many moments, is engaging and that’s thanks to Leto’s amazing performance of a highly conflicted man; someone whose whole life has been devoted to find healing, with the instincts of his new persona, a vampire who needs human blood for survival. Another plus of the movie is the romance between Morbius and Bancroft who I was all about. And on that note, Dr.Martine Bancroft is played by a super talented Latina Adria Arjona, a badass doctor who doesn’t get intimidated by FBI agents, nor vampires. She is as passionate as Morbius to find a cure for that rare illness even if that means doing some illegal and extremely dangerous maneuvers.

As I said, it’s not a brilliant “I-didn’t-see-that-coming” type of script, but nevertheless, it will keep you at the edge of your seat. Good job, Marvel for bringing an antihero to the screen!
