How Thalía is Embracing Her 50s and Talking Against Ageism

Thalía, the Mexican singer, songwriter, actress, and entrepreneur, has just released a self-written article for Vogue in which she talks about ageism. In the text, the Mexican singer puts her thoughts about age discrimination into words and reveals some of her most intimate experiences.

It’s an issue that has really hit home for Thalía since the media uses her age to talk about fashion and style, and she is appalled at headlines that say things such as “The style of wearing tennis shoes at 50” or “Look how to wear baggy pants and Nike tennis shoes at 50.”

“What defines what a woman should wear in her fifties? Why should a person of a certain age look, dress, and act a certain way? Why do they want to tell us what we should or should not use after a certain age? What is proper at 50 years of age? What is improper at 50? Isn’t fashion an extension of individual expression? Isn’t fashion timeless, asexual, it has no race, no language, but suddenly it does have an age?” she states.

Thalía continues by pointing out that while fashion runways all around the world are changing and becoming more inclusive about gender, body type, and race, they are still reluctant to include older models as if age is still a subject that can be discriminated against.

But one thing is clear: no one can escape the passage of time. “The funniest thing is that it is a sword that stalks us all, and, no matter how much you want to remove it or move it, it will always hang over our heads, lurking, to fall when we least expect it. We’re all going there! It is the only thing from which no one can escape: age.”

Meanwhile, more and more beauty products advertised as “anti-age” flood our stores and social media, not-so-subtly insinuating that anything related to the passage of time is wrong. However, Thalía doesn’t deny that she would have cosmetic surgery or laser treatment, and she does take pills to improve her youthful appearance.

“We have to change the narrative. We have to create safe and realistic dialogues where we can find out about the wonder that the passage of time gives us. Wisdom, emotional intelligence, our ever-changing history, our infinite creativity, the gift of being able to start a new version of yourself every day, the clarity of seeing life from experience, empathy already embodied, naked talks –clear and direct–, recognizing the power of saying no, taking ownership of your sexuality and a thousand other things that only with the years of life one understands and treasures.”

Thalía, in fact, assures that “at 50, the age of fire begins. It is the watershed in life where we set fire to what we have been dragging emotionally, physically, and spiritually.” For her, it means detachment from everything we drag along over the years and the opportunity to convert into a phoenix. “It is to vindicate ourselves before our own life story and emerge radiant from the ashes.”

Thalia aims to break down barriers and inspire readers to embrace their journeys, irrespective of age, as she fearlessly advocates for a more inclusive and accepting world. She encourages everyone, instead of perpetuating age discrimination and promoting unrealistic standards, should foster conversations that empower individuals of all ages to feel confident, beautiful, and valued.

“It is time to learn that each woman has her own path, her personal vision of how she wants to look despite her age. It is time to let go of the taboo that being sexy belongs to certain ages, or that being happy, fun, different, enterprising, powerful, and indomitable, does not suit women over 50. Can we let women just be?” she concludes.
