Spanish Names for Girls that Just Don’t Make Sense in English

Your name is probably one of the biggest decisions your parents made for you and the meaning of that name will encourage you, or haunt you for  years to come. That’s why we’re surprised a certain name choices we kind of took it as normal. But, are they really?

If you come from a Latin family, you probably have an aunt called Socorro, Dolores, or Soledad or similar. Those were once common names that are going out of favor (thankfully). Well, when you translate them into English, you start questioning why were our ancestors even thinking? Here is a list of the most common ones and their translation:

Dolores – In pains

Socorro – S.O.S

Soledad – Loneliness

Angustias – Anguish

Remedios – Remedies

Humildad – Humility

Would you call your little girl with an adjective that means something negative? Probably not.  But once upon a time, when Catholicism was at its best, parents would name you after the Saint of the day you were born, and Saints usually didn’t have the best or easiest lives.
