Should Jimmy Kimmel Be Cancelled Over Guillermo? | Opinion

Jimmy Kimmel is being accused of racist for his character Guillermo all over the internet and it is definitely not the first time…should Kimmel be canceled already? 

Calling out hypocrisy is my favorite pastime. And few people display such tone-deaf hypocrisy as Jimmy Kimmel, especially every time he parades his Mexican sidekick – and the butt of many racist jokes – Guillermo, on his late-night talk show.

A lot of people think Jimmy Kimmel should be cancelled this time as you can see under the hashtag #CancelJimmy. Now, I am not a big fan of cancel culture, I support free speech, and that includes calling public figures and entertainers out for racist tropes or playing up stereotypes. It is then up to them to listen to those concerns, and up to their audience to stop watching them if they do not. That might be a much better route towards more consciousness than Twitter mob campaigns, which are increasingly backfiring and only emboldening those being criticized.

But when you pander to cancel culture with every nightly monologue only because your PR team and the C-suite network executives convinced ($$$) you that the politically incorrect, incorrigible sense of humor that made you a late-night giant is no longer in fashion – as Jimmy has so gratuitously done the past few years – then you should suffer the same fate as the folks you pile on, while hoping people forget the time you did blackface.

To that, I urge Jimmy Kimmel to stop exploiting Guillermo and lay off the cheap, played out Mexican jokes. It’s time, dude. Either create a more serious platform for Guillermo, or maybe give him an Executive Producer position and pay raise – or be cancelled.
