Selena Gomez Just Released an Album and It’s All About Love

Selena Gomez is back with new music, and this time, she’s not going it alone. She’s teamed up with her fiancé Benny Blanco to release I Said I Love You First, a 15-track album that tells the story of their love through music. This marks her first full project in five years, as she previously focused on acting, producing, and her beauty brand, Rare Beauty. Fans have been eagerly awaiting her return to music, and she’s come through with an album that feels personal and nostalgic.

Love, Music, and a New Chapter

Released under SMG Music, Friends Keep Secrets, and Interscope Records, the album isn’t just a collection of songs but a reflection of the strong connection between Selena and Benny. The pair mentioned that the project came together naturally, stemming from the comfort and creative inspiration they share. It makes sense; ever since they went public with their relationship last year, Selena hasn’t shied away from expressing how happy and loved she feels. Now, that joy has been captured in her music.

The chemistry between Selena and Benny is evident throughout the album and in how they talk about creating it. In a behind-the-scenes chat released on Spotify, Selena shared that there was never a rigid plan or enforced creative process. “We’d wake up, have a conversation, and just talk. But it was never like, ‘Okay, what are we writing today?'” she explained. Meanwhile, Benny confessed that he felt like Selena’s personal journal during the process, constantly jotting down things she said because he saw potential lyrics in them.

The Tracklist: 15 Songs, One Story

The album kicks off with the title track, “I Said I Love You First,” a heartfelt introduction where Selena expresses gratitude for those who have been with her throughout her journey. This first track, which gives the album its name, is the speech she gave when she finished filming the last episode of Wizards of Waverly Place, the Disney Channel series that made her famous.

“Younger And Hotter Than Me” has quickly become a standout track, with fans buzzing about whether it hints at her past relationship with Justin Bieber. “All the girls at this party are younger and hotter than me. I hate what I wore, but I hate myself more for thinking you were different. Wish I never loved you, we’re not getting any younger but your girlfriends seem to” Selena sings.

The album balances vulnerability with empowerment. While songs like “You Said You Were Sorry” and “How Does It Feel To Be Forgotten” dive into themes of heartbreak and frustration, tracks like “Cowboy” and “Sunset Blvd” bring a lighter, more playful, and flirty vibe.

“Sunset Blvd” is particularly special—it’s a nod to where Selena and Benny had their very first date. Plus, it got picked as the third single from the album. In the music video, directed by Petra Collins, Selena and Benny reenact memorable scenes from Francis Ford Coppola’s 1982 film One From the Heart.

On the other hand, Scared Of Loving You, the lead single, is a stripped-down acoustic song about the fear of loving someone too much. Released on Valentine’s Day, it gave fans a first taste of the album’s raw emotions. “‘Cause I’m not scared of loving you, I’m just scared of losing you,” she sings. The song resonated deeply with listeners, and its simplicity made it stand out.

While the album is deeply personal, Selena and Benny brought in a few collaborators to elevate the experience, like Finneas, who tapped into it while making the album. “Call Me When You Break Up” features Gracie Abrams, “Bluest Flame” was co-written with Charli XCX, bringing a mix of pop influences, while the young rapper GloRilla suddenly appears in “Cowboy.”

The album also includes a surprise in “Ojos Tristes,” featuring María Zardoya of The Marías. This track has a nostalgic twist since it samples “Muchacho de los Ojos Tristes,” a song by Spanish singer Jeanette from 1981. The sample is used in the chorus, sung in Spanish by María Zardoya, while Selena’s voice harmonizes in the background.

So far, Selena and Benny haven’t announced a tour, but fans are already hoping for one. There’s also talk about Seven Heavens, a long-rumored experimental project from Selena that never saw the light of day. Some believe that now that she’s fully back in music, she might finally release it.
