Same Sex Marriage is Now Legal in Costa Rica
On May 26th, 2020, same-sex marriage became legal in Costa Rica, making it the first nation in Central America to do so and the sixth in Latin America. This stems from a 2018 Supreme Court ruling that found it unconstitutional to exclude same-sex couples from marriage rights, and would automatically legalize marriage equality in 18 months without action.

Eager couples legally tied the knot in mainly private ceremonies as a result of the coronavirus. Daritza Araya and Alexandra Qu Castillo became the first same-sex couple to be married, and did so on live TV.

The supreme court ruling is also in accordance with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights’ call to extend marriage and other rights to same-sex couples. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before other countries follow Costa Rica’s footsteps towards equality for all Latinx people.
