Salma Hayek on Latinas Playing Lead Roles

In the film industry, there are well known Latina actresses such as Jennifer Lopez, Eva Mendez, Roselyn Sanchez, Salma Hayek and more. Many may know Hayek for her leading role in the 2002 film, Frida, portraying the iconic painter. The fifty four year old actress was born in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico; she began her career in Mexico, and has appeared in many different films in more than a decade. Hayek was nominated for an Oscar as Best actress in her leading role as Frida.
One of her most recent acting projects is in the film “House of Gucci” portraying Pina Auriemma. The film will be released on November 24th. She was also cast to portray a superhero in a Marvel film, Eternals, premiering this November. The Mexican actress is also starring in the film, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, portraying Sonia Kincaid, premiering June 16 in theaters. During a recent interview with Variety, Hayek shared her experience auditioning for a leading role in two comedies as a female Mexican actress,
“The directors told me that I was the best audition and that I was better than who they cast and that they regretted it. But at the time, they knew the studios wouldn’t have gone for a Mexican as the lead.”
With over 17 million followers on Instagram, she continues to pave the way for Latina women and future generations of Latinas in the film industry. Hayek is using her voice to speak out about the lack of Latina representation in American films throughout the years. Hayek recognized those in power could make sure fewer stereotypes of Mexican women play certain acting roles, and actively works to make sure Latinas get fair representation in film.
