Rosario Dawson: The Afro Latina Actress Making Waves in Hollywood

Rosario Dawson is an American actress, producer, and activist who has made a name for herself in Hollywood with her talent and versatility. She was born on May 9th, 1979, in New York City. Her mother, of Puerto Rican, Taíno, Cuban, and African ancestry, was just 17 years old when she gave birth to Rosario. Rosario’s father, Patrick Harris, was of Native American and Irish ancestry and didn’t meet her until she was 4 years old. She was raised by her stepfather, Greg Dawson, who worked in construction.

Rosario Dawson grew up in a diverse household that celebrated her Afro-Latina roots. After moving to Texas, she attended Garland High School and then returned to New York to study at Hunter College. She also studied classical acting at The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute Young Actors at Strasberg program in West Hollywood, California.

In 2014, Dawson adopted a 12-year-old girl named Lola into her family. Rosario Dawson is also an outspoken activist for various causes. In February of 2020, she publicly shared her identity as a member of the LGBTQ community, announcing that she is queer.

At the age of 15, Rosario was discovered by director Harmony Korine, who cast her in his controversial movie “Kids” alongside a young Chloë Sevigny. She played a sexually promiscuous teen in the gritty tale about urban youth. This role launched her career, and she went on to star in a wide spectrum of independent and feature films, including “Sin City,” “Rent,” and “Grindhouse.”

Dawson has had a successful career in both film and television. She has starred in a variety of movies, including “Men in Black II,” “The Devil’s Rejects,” and “Unforgettable”. She has also top-lined independent films playing feisty characters such as in the thriller “Krystal” and the title role in the dramedy “La La Anthony.”
Focusing also on TV projects, Rosario has graced such action series/mini-series as “Daredevil,” “Iron Fist,” and “The Defenders,” as well as the comedy “Jane the Virgin” and animated cartoon series “The Last Kids on Earth.” She had a recurring role on “Jane the Virgin” as lawyer Jane Ramos.
In 2014, she was honored with the “Courage in Filmmaking Award” by the Women Film Critics Circle Awards for her impactful contributions to The Lower East Side Girls Club, the environmental organization Global Cool, the ONE Campaign, Oxfam, and Amnesty International. She also co-founded Voto Latino, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that encourages people to vote, in support of uplifting the Latinx community.

In 2020, Dawson portrayed the character Ahsoka Tano in the second season of The Mandalorian on Disney+. She currently is reprising that role in the TV series Ahsoka, in which she plays the protagonist.
