Why Last Night’s Oscars Have the Greatest Feminism Message

Why Last Night’s Oscars Have the Greatest Feminism Message

We are used to Hollywood’s idea of what a woman should look like in order to become a movie star; talented, beautiful, and young. With a male actor, the last two attributes are not so much of a requirement. But with women, being young, and in their “prime,” it’s a must to break in the industry. At least it was.

This year, however, this idea of having to be young to make it, it has been proven to be completely wrong. And that’s thanks to super talented actresses such as Jennifer Coolidge, Michelle Yeoh, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Let’s start with Jennifer Coolidge who stole the spotlight during Golden Globes for her performance in The White Lotus as Tanya.

“I had such big dreams and expectations as a younger [actor], but what happened is they get sort of fizzled by life… I had these giant ideas. And then you get older and s**t is going to happen,” she said. “Mike White, you have given me hope. You’ve given me a new beginning. Even if this is the end, you changed my life in a million different ways. My neighbors [are] speaking to me and things like that. I was never invited to one party and now everyone’s inviting me.”

Last night another proof that women can be in their prime whenever they decide to was reinforced by the two actresses who won the two best actress categories, Best Supporting and Best Actress, Jamie Lee Curtis.

“I know it looks like I am standing up here by myself, but I am not. I am hundreds of people,” the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star said. “My bae Michelle (Yeoh), Ke (Huy Quan), Stephanie (Hsu) – the entire group of artists who made this movie – we just won an Oscar.”

Jamie Lee Curtis is first time an Oscar winner at the age of 64. Then it came my favorite speech of all. As a matter of fact, a sentence, a line that it should be every woman’s motto:

“Ladies, don’t let anyone tell you, you are past your prime” – Michelle Yeoh

Said first-time nominee and Oscar-winner, Michelle Yeoh while wearing a white angelical outfit during the 95th Academy Awards Ceremony.

What a powerful message that is, let me highlight! Just a couple of weeks ago, CNN television anchor Don Lemon made a horrible remark about Presidential candidate Nikki Haley; “she is past her prime.” Excuse me, Don? You look like you passed yours ages ago with those obsolete comments.  Unless you are talking about your fertility (and that goes for both women and men), there is no such thing as being past your prime and that’s a message all men should get clear and loud.

In conclusion, I’m more than thrilled to have women speaking up and being recognized by their talent, not by how many birthdays they have on them.
