Non-Toxic Beauty: Why It Is So Important

Non-Toxic Beauty: Why It Is So Important

Have you ever considered that what you apply on your skin daily could have detrimental effects on your health? Holistic Nutritionist and Licensed Cosmetologist, Jessica Rose explains why and what alternatives you can use.

Here you can find a list of ingredients to avoid in your beauty products:

  • Parabens: are a group of chemicals widely used as artificial preservatives in cosmetic and body care products since the 1920s. They are bad though because they can act like the hormone estrogen in the body and disrupt the normal function of hormone systems affecting male and female reproductive system functioning, reproductive development, fertility and birth outcomes.
  • Aluminium: This is a heavy metal that should be avoided at all costs and it is widely used in deodorants.
  • Plastic: Find deodorants that are free of aluminum, parabens, phthalates, and chemicals, like Freedom’s Magic Lavender deodorant, that is also infused with Vitamin E for more moisturizing properties.
  • DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine). They are usually found in products that foam like facial cleansers and soaps. They are also found in eye makeup , fragrances, hair products, and sunscreens.
  • Mineral oil: A petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic, clogging its pores. This is incredibly harmful because it interferes with skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. And it’s scary because some baby products have it!
  • Triclosan: It’s a synthetic antibacterial agent that may disrupt thyroid function. Usually found in soaps, mouthwash, shaving cream, deodorants, toothpastes, etc.

As a rule of thumb, anything you have no idea what it is, stay away from it. Pick brands with simple ingredients and for hydration, maybe switch to coconut oil! If you want to know more about what products are best for your skin, check our segment with Jessica Rose on Get it Girl:
