The $900 Million ‘South Park’ Movie + Episode Deal

ViacomCBS just inked a deal to create a whole lot more South Park that is worth almost $1 Billion dollars. The $900 million dollar deal over 6 years is one of the biggest ever in TV and it calls for new episodes of South Park on Comedy Central and 14 new South Park movies to become a part of the Paramount+ with the very first movie coming out this year. This would mean the newest South Park anything since the ‘Pandemic Special’ which aired on Comedy Central. This might be the most exciting streaming news since we heard Michael B. Jordan is doing a black Superman series

This deal will only strengthen the power of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, at Comedy Central where they’re currently the visionaries behind the most successful franchise in the network. Dropping almost a billion dollars on one of the most controversial, but evergreen and successful animated series ever is another indication that Paramount+ is reaching into their catalog of hit series to try to compete with other streaming giants such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu as well as the rapidly growing Disney+. 

Hardcore fans of South Park will remember the bold decisions made prior to the 2016 election to have Mr. Garrison be the force that represented the Trump presidency vs. Trump himself. The storyline took various twists and turns until on the most recent ‘Pandemic Special’ of South Park it seems like things have gone almost back to normal. 

Matt Stone said in an interview published through Bloomberg that “We did a ‘South Park’ movie in 1999, and we’ve never done another one because the show has been so satisfying…Now we’re older, and the idea of what streaming movies can be is pretty promising.”

Given that Matt and Trey own 50% of all online rights to the show and enjoy arguably the most creative freedom in all of television, why wouldn’t they keep creating the show that has garnered so many fans. Their production company Park County is worth over $1 billion dollars. Media giants have been paying huge bucks to lisence South Park for years including an $87 million dollar deal for streaming rights to Hulu with a $110 million dollar follow up renewal deal and a jaw dropping $500 million dollar deal with HBO Max for 5 years of streaming rights. 

For Matt and Trey South Park is a money making creative machine that keeps on giving and for fans of South Park the series gives you everything from social commentary to horrifically offensive subject matter and some really really unique and adorable animation. Congratulations to Matt and Trey!
