Matthew Perry’s belongings now serve a bigger purpose after his passing
  • A selection of personal items from the late actor Matthew Perry will be auctioned on June 5 to raise funds aimed at fighting the stigma of addiction.

  • The collection includes original “Friends” scripts signed by the full cast, awards, and art pieces from artists such as Banksy.

  • Net proceeds will benefit the Matthew Perry Foundation and specialized addiction medicine programs and community support.

The estate of Matthew Perry, in collaboration with Heritage Auctions, has organized a special auction that seeks to transform the actor’s personal belongings into vital resources for the fight against addiction. This event, which will formally begin on June 5, aims to fund the Matthew Perry Foundation, an organization dedicated to breaking down the barriers of stigma and ensuring that those seeking recovery have access to evidence based care. Lisa Kasteler Calio, the foundation’s executive director, emphasized that this initiative honors Perry’s belief that addiction should be approached with compassion and science, ensuring that no one has to face this disease alone.

“Friends” treasures for collectors

For fans of the iconic series where Perry portrayed Chandler Bing, the auction offers invaluable pieces, highlighting a collection of 26 original scripts from memorable episodes and the series finale. Among the most coveted items are two scripts signed not only by Perry but also by Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer. Additionally, interested bidders can vie for iconic set elements, such as a replica of the yellow frame from Monica’s door, and the Screen Actors Guild award the actor received in 1995 alongside his castmates.

Art and personal objects with a purpose

Beyond his television career, the auction reveals Perry’s facet as an art collector, including works by contemporary figures such as Banksy and Mel Bochner. The catalog is complemented by intimate items, such as a photo album with personal notes, offering a closer look at the man behind the character. The pieces will be available for in person preview in Beverly Hills during the second half of May, allowing the public to appreciate the scale of a collection whose value will transcend the material to become scholarships and treatment programs.

Impact on addiction medicine

The funds raised will have a specific destination in prestigious institutions, such as Massachusetts General Hospital through the Matthew Perry Foundation Fellowship in Addiction Medicine. Likewise, initiatives such as Healing Appalachia and various grants for community organizations working directly in recovery processes will be supported. Following the actor’s passing in October 2023, these actions reaffirm his desire to be remembered more for his help to others on the path to sobriety than for his success in entertainment, building a future where mental health resources are accessible to all.
