Lizzo, Zendaya and ‘Squid Games’ Among Historic Wins at the Emmy Awards

Lizzo, Zendaya and ‘Squid Games’ Among Historic Wins at the Emmy Awards

After a long wait, the 2022 Emmys finally took place to crown the best of television.

And if you missed it, relax because here we bring you the summary with everything that happened to the last award of the night. Sit back and recap!

The start of the ceremony with the theme songs for Friends, Game Of Thrones and more.

Kenan Thompson surprised us all with a start where, before moving on to the award ceremony as such, he paid tribute to some legendary series from different eras with his iconic intros. The opening themes of Friends, The Brady Brunch, Law & Order, Stranger Things, Game Of Thrones and more were played.

Thompson also made a joke about Zendaya’s age and Leonardo Dicaprio: “Zendaya just turned 26, happy birthday to her. Twenty six is a strange age in Hollywood. She’s young enough to play a high school student, but too old to date Leonardo DiCaprio.”

Let’s review some of our favorite winners of the night!

Zendaya is the ‘it girl’ of Television

Sheryl Lee Ralph’s acceptance speech

The Emmy winner for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to Sheryl Lee Ralph for Abbott Elementary. But the actress received the award with a speech like few others. She got a mega ovation that undoubtedly showed that everyone (or at least the vast majority) trusted her to win.

But all this has an important background, Lee Ralph is the first woman of African descent to win that category in 35 years since Jackée Harry did it in 1987 for the series 227.

Lizzo’s speech was emotional and euphoric!

Watch Out For The Big Grrrls, a show hosted by the actress and singer, won the Best Competition Program award. And yet had another great speech from Lizzo that should be winning an award.

Lizzo stressed the importance of this type of programming as it offers an inclusive space for many people such as the competitors that appear in it.

“When I was a kid, all I wanted to see was me in the media… Someone fat like me, black like me, beautiful like me. If she could go back and say something to little Lizzo, she would say,

‘You’re going to see that person, but b*tch, you’ll have to be yourself.’ – LIZZO

Squid Games made history

For the first time in the main ceremony of the Emmys, a non-English speaking series – it is made entirely in South Korea – entered the fray to compete with the English-speaking productions that historically dominate the scene. If you haven’t seen Squid Games, where have you been!?

The South Korean Netflix series took home statuettes for Best Directing for a Drama Series (Hwang Dong-hyuk) and Best Actor in a Drama Series, the latter for Lee Jung Jae.

From Zendaya to Succession; from Ted Lasso to Jean Smart… Here’s the complete list of the winners of the 2022 Emmys.
