Lil Nas X Collaborator MSCHF Sued by Nike over ‘Satan Shoes’

Lil Nas X stirred the pot on more than one occasion last week, releasing his new “devilish” single entitled ‘Montero,’ then days later announcing his Nike Air Max 97 “Satan Shoes” collaboration with MSCHF, a tongue in cheek art collective that releases secret drops with provocative societal commentary every couple weeks via their website and app.

On March 26, Lil Nas X wrote a note to himself coming out publicly as gay. The rapper addressed the letter to “14-year-old Montero,” using his birth name, Montero Lamar Hill. “I know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist,” he wrote.

Fans and members of the LGBTQ+ community quickly praised the artist, thanking him for being transparent about who he is and paving the way for future generations to feel comfortable about their sexuality. However, many shut him down after feeling confused with his satanic fueled music video.

X then announced his collaboration with MSCHF and their “Satan Shoes,” set to be released on March 29 with a retail price of $1,018. The Nike Air Max 97’s allegedly contain 60cc of red ink and 1 drop of human blood with only 666 pairs made and individually numbered. The shoes have already sold out after their release yesterday.

Many of Nas X’s more conservative fans became enraged as the shoes display a pentagram pendant and a reference to Luke 10:18, a bible verse about Satan’s fall from heaven. The sneakers will be the rarest, but not the priciest since Kanye holds the record for the most expensive sneakers.

“My kids will never play Old Town road again. I’m still debating about wearing @Nike after this,” tweeted basketball player Nick Young.

Nike quickly came out and denied any association with the ‘Satan Shoes,’ and Nick Young took his Tweet back after he realized the shoes were not authorized by Nike. Fox News anchor Pete Hegseth theorized that Nike might have the right to sue the collaborator, MSCHF, and it looks like the sneaker giant did just that. The lawsuit argues that Nike must maintain control over its brand “by setting the record straight” on what products bear its distinctive “SWOOSH” logo. Lil Nas X was not named as a defendant in the complaint.

The lawsuit comes after “calls to boycott Nike in response to the launch of MSCHF’s Satan Shoes based on the mistaken belief that Nike authorized or approved this product,” the lawsuit stated.

And, as always, Lil Nas’ hilarious retort speaks for itself:

We would expect nothing less from one of the wittiest, most creative guys in the rap game.
