Your Guide to April’s Top Sports Events

April is here, and you know what that means: non-stop sports action! If you’re Latino and love sports, there’s no shortage of big events to watch this month. From soccer to basketball, NASCAR to UFC, we’ve got athletes representing our culture everywhere. Some are rookies trying to make a name for themselves, others are seasoned pros chasing history. Either way, it’s time to rep our people and tune in.
RACING INTO HISTORY: LATINOS IN F1 & NASCAR
F1 Japanese Grand Prix (April 4-6, Suzuka Circuit)
Formula 1 is back, and while the grid is mostly dominated by Europeans, one Latino driver is trying to change that. Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto is the only full-time Latino in F1 right now. After winning the Formula 3 championship in 2023, he finally made his F1 debut this season with Kick Sauber (formerly Alfa Romeo). At just 20 years old, he’s carrying the hopes of many South American racing fans. Suzuka is one of the most challenging circuits in the world, so this will be a big test for him.

NASCAR Goodyear 400 (April 6, Darlington Raceway)
Over in NASCAR, Daniel Suárez is flying the Mexican flag high. Suárez, who drives for Trackhouse Racing Team, made history in 2022 by becoming the second Latino to win a NASCAR Cup Series race. Every race is another chance to prove that Latinos belong in the sport, and Darlington will be another big moment for him.
F1 Bahrain Grand Prix (April 11-13, Bahrain International Circuit)
After Japan, Bortoleto will head to Bahrain for another F1 race. Can he make a statement and grab some points? We’ll be watching.

F1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix (April 18-20, Jeddah Corniche Circuit)
NASCAR Food City 500 (April 13, Bristol Motor Speedway)
Daniel Suárez will take on the high banks of Bristol, one of the most exciting short tracks in NASCAR. Expect lots of bumping, aggressive moves, and hopefully, a strong finish for Suárez.
BASKETBALL HEATING UP: THE FINAL FOURS
Women’s Final Four (April 4-6, Tampa, FL)
The NCAA Women’s Final Four is stacked, and one Latina baller is there to represent. Gabriela Jaquez (Mexican descent) is representing UCLA as they face UConn. UCLA hasn’t won a championship since 1978, so could this be their year?

Men’s Final Four (April 5-7, San Antonio, TX)
This year’s Men’s Final Four is going to be epic. Auburn vs. Florida and Duke vs. Houston will decide who makes it to the championship game. The Latino players to watch are from Auburn Tigers, Chad Baker-Mazara (Dominican Republic), and from Florida Gators, Isaiah Brown (Puerto Rican descent) and Kevin Pazmiño (Ecuadorian descent).
