La Suprema, the poignant debut feature from Colombian director Felipe Holguín Caro, has been selected to represent Colombia at the prestigious Academy Awards. This 83-minute film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, has garnered critical acclaim across multiple international festivals.

The members of the Colombian Academy of Cinema chose La Suprema it to represent the country at the Goya Awards and The Oscars. It is also among the five films nominated for the Shine Global Resilience Awards, which recognize and celebrate films and filmmakers that highlight the resilience and strength of young people facing adversities around the world.

Set in a remote town in the Colombian Caribbean that is virtually erased from maps, La Suprema follows the journey of Laureana, an Afro-Colombian teenager who dreams of boxing. When she learns that her uncle, Anastasio Páez, will compete for the world boxing title, she convinces Efraín, her uncle’s former trainer, to help her prepare for her own boxing ambitions. With the odds stacked against them, Laureana and her community band together to secure electricity and a television in order to watch the fight, ultimately revealing their greater struggle against the threat of oblivion.

La Suprema has made waves at numerous film festivals, including the Warsaw Film Festival, Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, and Miami Film Festival, winning several awards such as the Silver Colón Audience Award and Best Feature Film at the Colombian Film Festival in New York.
