Karen’ the Movie is Coming

So many films and shows these days are totally cringeworthy. And the upcoming thriller release Karen is shaping up to be a landmark of cringe. I just saw the trailer for Karen, and I can’t stop laughing – not only because the title character lives up to the meme about entitled white women in the most hilarious way – but because it is so unbelievably cringe-y! It’s like they took every stereotype and woke narrative, put it into a blender without nuance or subtlety, and spit out this trite (possibly unintended) satire on race relations in America (or at least in the suburbs).

The filmmakers obviously went for a Get Out! knock off, but fall miserably short of Jordan Peele’s masterpiece. A trailer dropped over the weekend for the upcoming horror film, starring Taryn Manning, and the internet is reacting the way many of us thought they would…by cringing.

Manning, known for her breakout role in Orange Is the New Black, will be playing the titular role in the BET film production. Cory Hardrict (“American Sniper”) and Jasmine Burke (“Saints & Sinners”) will star alongside Manning, with Coke Daniels (“His, Hers & the Truth”) directing.

Karen centers around a racist white woman named Karen White (I see what they did there), who embodies the intolerant, manager-calling and racist behaviors we have come to associate with all those “Karens” out there. The trailer teases how White’s motives align with her name’s notorious reputation when a young black couple, portrayed by Hardrict and Burke, eagerly arrive in their new neighborhood.

That’s when Karen really lives up to her name.
