Julio Torres to Direct and Star in New Film with Tilda Swinton

From working the coat check at a museum to the stand-up comedy scene until he made it to the writers room of SNL, to making his directorial debut in a brand new film this year, Julio Torres knew what his dream was all along: to create something that feels true to his authentic self, and making his vision accessible to someone who has lived a completely different life than his.

The Los Espookys star will be directing his first project with A24, writing and starring alongside Scottish actress Tilda Swinton, who is known for supporting independent films. Emma Stone and Dave McCary will be heading up production of the long-awaited film. The details are still being kept under wraps, but we know it is bound to be a comedy. The El Salvador native continues to write sketches for Saturday Night Live, where he served as a full-time writer for three years, and let’s not forget his pre-pandemic comedy special, My Favorite Shapes (HBO).

Anything that Torres touches seems to become comedy gold; however, it hasn’t always been flowers and butterflies for the queer Latino immigrant comedian, whose humor is quite abstract. He has made a huge effort to exploit his unique perspective and honed in on his ability to spawn humor from any situation. “There are certain things that people do or say that stick a little bit in my head,” he told the media in 2019.

So, what can we expect from Torres’ new film?

Well, we know he does things that feel good, and if he can’t do that, he probably won’t even take the job. So, if you loved his work on Los Espookys and SNL, you’re sure to love this new film.
