Netflix honors Juan Gabriel with new docuseries Debo, Puedo y Quiero

Netflix is gearing up to honor one of Latin America’s most treasured and intriguing icons. On October 30, the platform will debut Juan Gabriel: Debo, Puedo y Quiero (I Must, I Can, I Will), a four-part docuseries that delivers an unprecedented glimpse into the life and legacy of El Divo de Juárez, one of the most influential figures in the history of Mexican music.

More than just a performer, Juan Gabriel was a composer, producer, and storyteller who shaped the musical landscape of Latin America for generations. With over 1,800 songs to his name (many of which have been translated into multiple languages), his artistry crossed borders, genres, and decades. Yet until now, no film or series had fully captured both the magnitude of his talent and the vulnerability behind the legend.

Directed by María José Cuevas, the series unveils 40 years of archives

Directed by María José Cuevas, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Bellas de Noche and La Dama del Silencio: El caso Mataviejitas, and produced by Laura Woldenberg and Ivonne Gutiérrez, the series draws from over forty years of personal archives: videos, photos, and recordings taken by Juan Gabriel himself. This rich collection of intimate material forms the heart of a story that moves beyond the stage lights to reveal the man behind the myth.

The production, created by Mezcla, delves deep into the duality that defined Alberto Aguilera Valadez: the artist who dazzled millions, and the human who turned solitude and vulnerability into creative strength. The result is a portrait that feels both expansive and deeply personal, an emotional journey through the joys and struggles that fueled his genius.

A journey through Juan Gabriel’s artistry, solitude, and resilience

Born in Parácuaro, Michoacán, in 1950, Aguilera’s journey to stardom began in hardship. Growing up in Ciudad Juárez, he found solace and purpose in music, penning his first songs as a teenager. After years of performing in local bars and facing rejection in Mexico City, he signed with RCA Victor in 1971, marking the birth of Juan Gabriel, an artist whose name would soon become synonymous with Mexican popular music.

Through rare footage and personal reflections, Debo, Puedo y Quiero revisits the milestones of his extraordinary career: the creation of timeless hits like “Amor Eterno,” “Querida,” and “La Diferencia”; his collaborations with icons such as Rocío Dúrcal, José José, and Lucha Villa; and the countless performances that made audiences around the world fall in love with his music.

But beyond the glamour and accolades, the series also reveals Juan Gabriel’s humanity: his humor, insecurities, and relentless drive to create. It paints a picture of an artist who not only redefined the sound of Latin music but also challenged norms about identity, emotion, and authenticity, long before it became popular to do so.

As the world approaches the tenth anniversary of his passing, Netflix’s Juan Gabriel: Debo, Puedo y Quiero arrives as both a celebration and a revelation, a reminder of how one man’s voice became the soundtrack of an entire continent, and how his spirit continues to inspire millions who still sing, cry, and dance to his songs.
