Jheniffer Cordinali slapped in Tigres vs Atlético San Luis: What really happened?

Controversy once again stole the spotlight in the Liga MX Femenil during Tigres’ 5–1 victory over Atlético San Luis on Matchday 16. What began as a routine closing stretch turned chaotic when Brazilian striker Jheniffer Cordinali became the center of attention in one of the weekend’s most heated moments.

With Tigres already securing the win, tensions rose near the 87th minute when San Luis defender Wendy Natis confronted Cordinali after a hard challenge. In the scuffle that followed, Natis slapped the Tigres forward in full view of referee Ana Cristina Guarneros and both benches.

The slap, the confusion, and the red card that shocked everyone

Despite the clear aggression, the situation took a surprising twist. While Natis received a straight red for her action, Cordinali was also sent off moments later, after Guarneros appeared to misidentify her as the player who initiated a shove during the confrontation.

Outraged by the call, the 21-year-old striker had to be restrained by teammates Thembi Kgatlana and several members of Tigres’ staff as she protested the decision on her way to the locker room. The Brazilian, who has scored seven goals this season, left visibly furious, while fans at the Estadio Universitario voiced their frustration at the officiating.

What punishment could Cordinali face?

According to Liga MX Femenil regulations, a straight red card generally results in a one-match suspension, but the sanction could extend to two or even three games given Cordinali’s confrontation with the referee after the incident.

The Disciplinary Commission is expected to review the case early this week, as Tigres prepare for the final matchday of the regular season and a likely top-seed spot heading into the Liguilla.

Despite the flare-up, Tigres’ dominance remains untouched, leading the league with 41 points, 58 goals scored, and just 9 conceded, reaffirming their position as the powerhouse of Mexican women’s football.
