I Said I Love You First: A Love Story in Music

The two first worked together 10 years ago when Benny helped produce Selena’s hit ‘Same Old Love.’ They collaborated again on ‘Single Soon’ and ‘I Can’t Get Enough’ (with J Balvin and Tainy), but back then, it was just music, no romance. It wasn’t until late 2023 that their relationship turned into something more. By December 2024, they were engaged, and now, just a few months later, they’re giving us an entire album about their love story.
And because they’re deep in their “love era,” they did what any couple making an album of love songs would do: they announced it on Valentine’s Day. At midnight on February 13, Selena posted a series of photos on Instagram with the album cover, showing the two cuddled up in bed, with a caption calling Benny her best friend. It was a big surprise for fans, especially since most were expecting a solo album. But instead, she’s giving us something even more personal.
Everything We Know About I Said I Love You First
Selena hasn’t released a full studio album since Rare in 2020, which was followed by her Spanish EP, Revelación. Fans have been eagerly waiting for new music, and now she’s returning with something truly different. According to the album’s official website, I Said I Love You First “celebrates the pair’s love story, giving fans a unique window into their relationship.”

“This album naturally came together because of the ease they both felt while collaborating, enabling them to create art that genuinely captures their journey. It tells their complete story—from before they met, to falling in love, and looking toward the future,” the site adds.
This isn’t just an album, it’s a romantic diary created by two people who feel comfortable enough with each other to let the world in. They worked on it naturally, without pressure, just creating songs that reflect what they’ve been experiencing together. It’s raw, honest, and probably the most personal project Selena has ever done.

The First Single: Scared of Loving You
To start things off, Selena and Benny dropped their first single from the album, Scared of Loving You, right when they announced the project. The song dives into the fears that come with falling in love: the hesitation, the overthinking, and taking emotional risks.

Along with the song, they released a sweet video filmed at Disneyland, where they look genuinely happy, enjoying a date like any other couple. Another clip shows them lying in bed together, exchanging affectionate looks and small, intimate gestures. It’s a song about vulnerability in relationships, something Selena has talked about a lot. She’s been open about how love isn’t just about excitement: it also comes with doubts, insecurities, and the fear of getting hurt.

In the first verse, she sings: “When I was young, I would love too fast / Hope I don’t repeat my past.”
It’s a moment of self-reflection, where she acknowledges past mistakes but is trying to move forward. She’s opening up to Benny in a way that feels real, not just writing about love in a dreamy, perfect way, but showing the struggles and growth that come with it.
