Let’s Talk About HIV+ and Healthy Living

According to the World Health Organization, with increasing access to effective HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care, HIV infection has become a manageable chronic health condition, enabling people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives.
Let’s normalize conversations about LGBTQ health. Taking care of yourself and adjusting to a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important things to do in general, and even more so, if you, or someone you know, have been diagnosed with HIV. Here’s to you: Living Y Ready!
Ask for support
Think of three people who have always taken care of you. Now is the time to lean on the people you love and trust —sharing the load will make it seem lighter.
While you may feel lonely right now, remember that there are millions of people out there who understand what you’re feeling right now. Support and information are available when you are ready.
Go at your own pace
Breathe. Take time for yourself and allow yourself to break down if you need to. Take all the time you need and be kind to yourself.
Pay closer attention to nutrition and exercise
Being active in your self-care is essential to staying healthy longer. Eat fresh, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and lean protein. Also, having a regular workout routine will keep you active and motivated.
Surround yourself with positive people
Find people living with HIV. When you come together and embrace community, something intense happens. While our friends and family are there to support, finding people who have been through the same journey will help you realize that you can and will get through it.
The power is yours
You will need to become a strong advocate for your own health and well-being.Treatment options have never been better, and incredible care is available to you.
Keep going!
Remember how far we’ve come and how many options for treatment have improved over the years. Medications continue to be available, and with lots of research, the cure seems to be getting closer.
You were diagnosed with HIV —now what?
Doctors recommend that even if you don’t feel sick, you should start taking anti-HIV drugs a.k.a. antiretroviral therapy (ART). You can also get medicines that will prevent other people from getting the virus and continue to check the results of your laboratory tests.
