Dr. Dre’s South L.A. Public High School opens Fall 2022

Dr. Dre will open a public high school in South LA in the fall of next year according to an interview he did with the LA Times. The project is in partnership with his billionaire buddy Jimmy Iovine and they are hoping the school will be the kind of place the youth of South LA can learn valuable skills to become the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators. LA has dominated in sports, but now it could be dominating in public education.
Plans for the school were approved only last week by the LA Board for Education and it’s a magnet school where kids from the district can apply for admission. It’s one of 10 new approved magnet schools with transportation provided.
The big picture plans for the school are a broader effort to help improve the public school situation in LA which has seen a decline in enrollment over the past few years due to gentrification and lower immigration. With many middle-class Latino and Black students opting to go to charter schools or private schools, enrolment numbers can deeply impact the resources available for public schools so projects like this could stimulate a better public high school situation for many of LA’s students.
After a health scare recently, Dr. Dre seems less concerned with his net worth and more concerned with leaving a lasting legacy. In his interview with LA times Dr. Dre said “Here’s a place that you can go where there’s something that you can learn that you’re really interested in.”
No, he’s not putting the “high” in high school.
Your move Snoop.
