Copa America 2024, group phase: Who lost, who won, and how they celebrated

The Copa America 2024 group phase has given us some thrilling matches and unforgettable moments, as each one of the 16 initial teams battled fiercely for a spot in the quarterfinals. The group stage saw remarkable performances and celebrations, with Argentina, Canada, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay, Panama, Brazil, and Colombia securing their places in the next round.

But some of the most unforgettable moments from the Cup definitely revolved around the celebrations from both fans and players. These demonstrations of passion and excitement have shown us what football brings to the hearts of millions.

Group A: Argentina and Canada

The first two spots in the Copa América quarterfinals were decided after Argentina’s 2-0 against Peru at Hard Rock Stadium and Chile’s tie with Canada at Exploria Stadium in Orlando. The Albiceleste took first place in Group A with a perfect score and no goals against them. They will play Ecuador on July 4th at NRG Stadium in Houston, while Canada will face Venezuela.

Argentina: Argentina fans are known for their passion, and their celebration after securing a place in the quarterfinals was no different. Fans erupted into joyous celebration following their 1-0 victory over Chile. The party spilled out of the stadium and into the streets, where fans danced, sang, and even lifted a stadium security guard in the air. It was a display of pure euphoria and pride, showing just how much football means to the Argentine people.

Canada: Canada’s path to the quarterfinals wasn’t easy, but their celebration was unique and memorable. Following a crucial 0-0 draw with Chile, Richie Laryea, and Alphonso Davies led a joyful dance and sang along to “Position” by Franglish while riding on the team bus. And they have every right to be this excited- it is the first time they have ever participated in a Copa America, and they’ve already advanced to this stage!

Group B: Venezuela and Ecuador

Venezuela made history at the Copa America by qualifying for the quarterfinals as group leader with a perfect score, a first-time feat achieved after defeating Jamaica 3-0, who ended scoreless. They will face Canada on Friday, July 5th. Meanwhile, Mexico and Ecuador played a decisive match, with Ecuador finishing second on goal difference to face Argentina.

Venezuela: After their 2-0 win over Mexico in the second round of the group phase, which secured their pass to the quarter-finals, the locker room turned into an all-out party! Players sang, jumped, and threw water bottles in the air. The song of choice? “Hola Perdida” by Argentine cuarteto singer Luck Ra, which brought a little touch of Argentine culture into their own victory party.

Group C: Uruguay and Panama

Uruguay came first in Group C after defeating the USA 1-0. Marcelo Bielsa’s team finished the group round with a perfect score after winning all three games, while the USA, despite having a strong team and being the host of the competition, was unfortunately eliminated. Panama’s impressive 3-1 victory over Bolivia secured their place in the quarterfinals alongside Uruguay. This marks the first time they’ve been able to advance to this stage of the Copa America.

Panama: Instead of the usual chant “sí se puede” (it is possible), Panamanian fans sang “sí se pudo” (it was possible), a subtle change in words that reflected the ups-and-downs of their journey and how they’ve fulfilled their dream. The team celebrated outside the stadium, sharing the moment with fans and showing their gratitude for the support.

Colombia, extending their unbeaten streak to 26 games and finishing as group leaders with seven points, will play against Panama in the quarterfinals. On the same day, Brazil will face Uruguay in what promises to be the most exciting match of the next phase. Meanwhile, Costa Rica beat Paraguay but was eliminated, finishing third in the group along with the bottom-placed Albirroja.

Colombia: Thousands of Colombian fans gathered in cities across their country to watch the final group phase match together, wearing team shirts and waving flags. Even though they were far from the US, where the match took place, and despite the game ending in a tie, they passionately celebrated their team finishing top in the group.
