What’s the deal with Cinco de Mayo? Spoiler alert: it’s not Mexico’s Independence Day!

The Roots of Cinco de Mayo

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Rather, it commemorates a pivotal moment in Mexican history – the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5th, 1862. At the time, Mexico was facing a daunting challenge. The country had recently defaulted on debt payments to several European countries, and in response, France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand repayment.

While Britain and Spain eventually negotiated a settlement, the French, under the command of Napoleon III, decided to invade Mexico and establish a monarchy there. The French army, which was considered one of the most formidable military forces in the world at the time, set its sights on the city of Puebla, expecting an easy victory.

However, the Mexican forces, led by the courageous General Ignacio Zaragoza, had other plans. Outnumbered and outgunned, the Mexican troops fought with unwavering determination and managed to defeat the French in a stunning upset. This victory, though ultimately short-lived, became a symbol of Mexican resilience and national pride.
