Catherine Zeta-Jones Will Play Morticia Addams in Netflix’s Wednesday

Hollywood veteran Catherine Zeta-Jones has just been announced to be joining the cast of Netflix’s new series, Wednesday, Tim Burton’s take on the story of the classic Addams Family. She will be portraying a key figure in the unconventional family, none other than the matriarch of the Addams Family, Morticia Addams. In a twitter post on the official account of Netflix, they announced the casting of Catherine Zeta-Jones, together with Luis Guzmán who will be playing Morticia’s beau, Gomez Addams, and Jena Ortega who will take on the titular character, Wednesday Addams.

Catherine Zeta-Jones has been known as a scene-stealing actress standing out in the roles she was given, and most notably in 2002, she starred as the notorious and fiery Velma Kelly in the musical black comedy crime film Chicago opposite Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart, and Richare Gere as Billy Flynn. Zeta-Jones played a showgirl who was in prison for murdering her husband and sister after she caught the two in bed together. She won the prestigious Oscar’s Award for Best Supporting Actress for this role, beating Hollywood powerhouses Meryl Streep, Chicago co-star Queen Latifah, Julianne Moore, and Kathy Bates. She also led Chicago to also win the coveted Best Picture Award in the 2003 Academy Awards.

But even before this stellar performance, Catherine Zeta-Jones was already a boxoffice darling. She starred as Eléna Montero in the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro, who was the love interest of the titular character Zorro, played by Antonio Banderas. She also played Helena Ayala in the critically acclaimed 2000 film Traffic together with a star-studded cast led by Benicio Del Toro, Don Cheadle, Michael Douglas, and her Wednesday co-star Luis Guzmán.

Catherine Zeta-Jones will be joining the list of legendary actresses who have portrayed the iconic Morticia Addams in TV and in film, together with Charlize Theron, Anjelica Huston, Carolyn Jones, and Daryl Hannah.

Featuring a very diverse cast led by the Mexican-American actress Jena Ortega, Netflix’s Wednesday is a coming-of-age comedy written by the creators of the hit superhero TV show Smallville, Al Gough and Miles Millar, while taking the help is critically acclaimed director Tim Burton known for blockbuster movies such as Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Bettlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands. The series will be a mystery with supernatural and investigative elements which follows Wednesday Addams’s days as a student at the Nevermore Academy as she attempts to master her awakening psychic abilities. Wednesday will also be involved in solving the supernatural mysteries that has surrounded her family and her parent for over 25 years, as she fights a mysterious killer who has been terrorizing their local town, while also navigating her relationships as a teenager.

Burton will also serve as the executive producer of the series, together creator and writers Gough and Millar. The series received the greenlight for an eight-episode order. As of writing, Netflix’s Wednesday’s premiere hasn’t been announced yet, as well as who would be playing the rest of the Addams family, but expect to hear some news very soon.
