Baja Beach Festival 2022: 6 days of Reggaeton with the legends Daddy Yankee and Wisin y Yandel

If enjoying a weekend at the beach, listening to the legends of reggaeton and the new figures who are gaining their space in Latin music does not convince you to go to Rosarito Beach, in Mexico, in the coming days, we can add another excellent reason. The 2022 edition of the Baja Beach Festival will have Wisin y Yandel, in one of their last performances as a duo, and Daddy Yankee, who this year is ending his career with a farewell tour.
Unlike the first editions of this festival, when the founders, Aaron Ampudia and Chris Den Uijl, sought to introduce the new artists of Latin music, as soon as they learned that Daddy Yankee was retiring, they decided that the Baja Beach Festival 2022 would celebrate reggaeton with the presence of the most recognized figures.
“From the world-renowned legends and pioneers of Reggaeton to the newer artists who are impressing billions of fans worldwide, the 2022 lineup has it all,” it’s announced in the festival’s official web page. During both weekends the lineup will be identical:

Where is the Baja Beach Festival 2022
The Baja Beach Fest takes place on Rosarito Beach, just one hour south of San Diego, California. You can get there by car, a 45-minute drive from the border to the festival. And if you fly, you have to think of a 3-hour drive from the Los Angeles International Airport, a 40-minute drive from the Tijuana International Airport, or a 55-minute drive from the San Diego International Airport.
There are several options of accommodation, at vacation rentals or hotels, depending on your preferences and budget. At the web page you can browse recommended communities and featured hotels.
What will happen?
There will be a lot more than music: a ferris wheel onsite, overlooking the festival grounds and the Pacific Ocean (all proceeds from rides will be donated); a glam station, where you can get your hair braided and/or colored; a games garden; art installations ideal for taking pictures; a roller skate rink; carnival games; and a Baja Booty tent, where you can scan your wristband and enter to win GA to VIP Pass Upgrades, 2023 GA & VIP Passes, Artist Meet & Greet, Baja Beach Fest Merch, and Food & Drink Vouchers.
And speaking of food and drink, some options to eat onsite are birria, carne asada, and seafood tacos; hamburgers; hotdogs; chicken tenders & fries; and churros. And you’ll also find full bars, serving beer, tequila, vodka, whiskey, rum, and more; and a michelada bar.
History
The Baja Beach Festival was created in 2018 by Aaron Ampudia y Chris Den Uijl. Since Aaron´s family owns the club Papas & Beer, on Rosarito Beach, and the 3-acres of the property offered an ample space, Chris thought that creating a festival for the Latin community and Americans who like reggaeton was a good idea. And it really was.
The festival has sold out three years in a row and not only attracts Mexicans and Latinos living on the US west coast, but Latin Americans from all over the world, who travel to Baja California in August “to celebrate and uplift Latin culture, and the incredible music, people, food, and amazing energy that comes with it”.
In 2018, the first year, 15.000 people attended the Baja Beach Festival in just two days and, after it was suspended in 2020 due to Covid-19, it returned in 2021 and expanded to two separate weekends of three days each. Even though there were restrictions for the pandemic -everyone had to present proof of vaccination or a negative test and had to wear a face mask- there were 35.000 people every day.
Ampudia runs three music festivals (Baja Beach Fest, Papas’ Beach Bash, Sueños Chicago), five clubs (two Papas & Beer, two Cantina Papas, Nink, Mango Mango), and clothing stores. On the other hand, Den Uijl’s expertise in talent buying -as well as event promotion and production across multiple genres- has helped put these festivals on the map, both nationally and internationally. Together they also run Chicago’s new Latin reggaeton festival, Sueños Festival, which has been featured in Forbes this year.
