Bad Bunny’s Non-Binary Style and Outfits

Bad Bunny’s Non-Binary Style and Outfits

The “El Conejo Malo” singer aka Bad Bunny’s gender fluid style and fashion choices tend to be rather controversial. Of course, we love it – here’s why.

Many artists set trends not only with their music, but also with their look and fashion choices. Bad Bunny is no exception. His unique, non-binary style can be best described by the phrase – which just so happens to also be the title of one of his albums, YHLQMDLG – (“Yo Hago Lo Que Me Da La Gana” / “I Do What I Want”) and shows that his preferences and the ways he chooses to express himself are not bound by gender.

Far from the looks of today’s stereotypical male rapper or star, the Puerto Rican singer, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, prefers another style. For the Icons Issue of fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, he choose to sport a white outfit, formal shirt, and a skirt. “I’m taking advantage of this moment in my life where I can do whatever I want, so I get to live life more authentically”, he explained. Bad Bunny is One of Harper’s Bazaar’s 21 Icons.

The rapper, singer, and songwriter, who was born in Almirante Sur, wore a total black look for the 2021 Grammys. It was also genderless; a dress,  pleaded skirt, and a long coat to go along with pantyhose and combat boots. To add some color, he had yellow sunglasses and carried a sunflower. Name another celebrity that can pull that off!

Bad Bunny’s Message to Society

Although you might think that the non-binary style that “El Conejo Malo” has outwardly embodied may be a strategy to attract attention, but the truth is that it seems to be an irreverent way to communicate an important message. First, that fashion and clothing possess no gender restrictions. And secondly, to spark the conversation around how society has traditionally perceived masculinity and femininity with respect to style and expression. However, judging from his fits as of late, it’s clear that Bad Bunny does not allow others’ perceptions to influence his decisions. Perhaps, he will serve as a guide, revealing the direction in which the world is shifting its views.

On the other hand, it may be another way to show his support to the LGBTIQ+ community. In fact, in 2020, in an interview with the LA Times, he said that he sees himself as fluid. Even though he stated that he is heterosexual, and he likes women – he’s currently dating the jewelry designer Gabriela Berlingeri – he added “for the moment”, and that he didn’t know whether in 20 years if things may change. “One never knows in life” he concluded. The rumors about Bad Bunny being gay started to flow again around the internet after he surprised everyone at the VMAs and kissed a male backup dancer.

And while he often receives criticism from people who don’t share his vision on fashion, the top ranking artist in music streams and global superstar continues to serves an inspiration to others. Earlier this year, a renowned clothing brand chose him to be the image of the trends of the new season and to model vibrant colors outfits. On that occasion, he didn’t wear a skirt but he did sport high heels.

He sure knows how to surprise his followers and can go from a total white or total black outfit in one public appearance, to very colorful mixes in the next, usually involving yellow or pink clothes, funny hats, and other accessories. And he’s not afraid of using a flower pattern, or a skirt combined with a tie. For Allure magazine he even agreed to wearing makeup and have his nails painted, a clear showcase rebellion against stereotypes.

Bad Bunny Continues to Push Boundaries

Although he doesn´t hesitate to mix feminine and masculine in his clothing, for the video of his song “Yo perreo sola”, Bad Bunny appeared dressed with his usual non-binary style, but also as a woman! Something that was unsurprisingly criticized by several people, but at the same time well received by others, who celebrated his message of empowering women and the removal of gender barriers.

Needless to say, Bad Bunny possesses a controversial style that has not gone unnoticed by the masses. Given his popularity and global reach, he continues to inspire and influence others, despite the negative feedback from some members of the public. And for that, we are glad.

Keep doing you, Bad Bunny!
