7 Ways to Practice Healing and Self Care

Interested in finding some ways to show yourself some love? Here are seven different methods to assist in your healing and self care!

Meditation

Practiced for hundreds of years, meditation has proven to have some serious healing benefits. Some may argue that it’s not worth it because it’s “boring” or “doesn’t work,” but it’s quite simple to get started, and FREE! Check out this video from our Mental Health Mondays to learn more about meditation.

Journaling

This method requires just two things: pen and paper. When you get up in the morning, instead of checking your phone for the first time and scrolling through social media, try journaling. Take 10 minutes to reflect and write down how you feel, what you’re grateful for and your goals for the day, week or year.

Nourishing your body and checking in

It’s easy to get busy and forget to check in with yourself. This could look like accidentally skipping a meal or sleeping less. Nevertheless, conduct a daily self check-in, an easy way to practice this nourishment is staying hydrated and well rested.

Daily affirmations

Long story short, talk to yourself. We’re not kidding. Another way to show some self love and care is by giving yourself affirmations. Standing in the mirror and saying compliments or comforting messages out loud, can help boost your confidence and make you feel good!

Exercise

Get moving! For lots of people, it’s hard to squeeze in a full hour workout during their busy day, but making simple decisions like choosing the stairs over elevators or standing more often than sitting, can help you get some movement in your day. For those who have more flexible time, try walking, yoga or running if you’re up to it!

Winding down without electronics

Sleep is so important, and your relationship with your phone can stop you from getting a great night’s sleep. Health professionals recommend that you ditch your electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime. This is because the blue light coming from your phone can prevent melatonin from producing in your brain, keeping you awake longer. In addition to turning your phone off, another way to help your eyes decompress is to use glasses that block out blue light!

Treat yo self!

To quote the hilarious Tom and Donna from the sitcom Parks and Recreation, “treat yo self!” In the show, these characters, played by Retta and Aziz Ansari, go on an annual “treat yo self” friend date where they dedicate an entire day to treating themselves to spa treatments, shopping, and mimosas. Give this a try with your best friend or even solo!

Whether you take inspiration from this list or prefer to treat yourself in a different way, it’s important to set some time aside to care for yourself and thrive.
