The 2024 Copa America is just around the corner! As the passion for soccer unites the entire continent, here is everything you need to know about the oldest national team tournament in the world.
CONMEBOL 2024 Copa America: Here’s what you need to know
This year’s Copa America will take place from June 20th to July 14th in the United States. This tournament features 16 teams from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). The format includes four groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
This will be the second time the tournament has 16 teams, the first being in 2016, also in the US. Besides the 10 teams from CONMEBOL, six teams from CONCACAF will join: the United States, Mexico, Panama, Jamaica, Canada, and Costa Rica.

The tournament will consist of 32 matches held in 14 cities across the US. The opening game will see Argentina, the defending champion, play against Canada in Atlanta. Group A also includes Peru and Chile. Group B has Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica. Group C includes the United States, Uruguay, Panama, and Bolivia. Group D consists of Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Costa Rica.
Each team will play the others in their own group once. Then the top two teams from each group move on to the knockout stages, starting with the quarterfinals, with the final match being held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The tournament will hand out a record $72 million in total. Each team will receive $2 million for participating, with an additional $2 million going to the teams that make it to the quarterfinals. The fourth-place team will get $4 million, third place $5 million, the runner-up $7 million, and the champion will take home $16 million.
Shakira’s song “Puntería,” featuring Cardi B, is the official song for this Copa América. This is the third time Shakira’s music is associated with a major soccer event, following “Waka Waka” in 2010 and “La La La” in 2014.
