World Down Syndrome Day: Meet Sofia Jirau

March 21st is a special day because it signifies World Down Syndrome Day. This day brings to light the highly underrepresented minority of people with down syndrome. This year will mark the 18th anniversary and the 12th year it is officially acknowledged by the United Nations. It is important to have this day exist and be acknowledged by the United Nations in order for people to acknowledge people with down syndrome.

What is Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material affects physical and cognitive development, causing a range of characteristics such as intellectual disability, distinctive facial features, and certain health problems. Thankfully people with Down syndrome can live fulfilling lives with support, care, and access to resources.  

 

Who is Sofia Jirau 

Sofia Jirau is a model and social media sensation from Puerto Rico who has captured the hearts of millions around the world. Born with Down syndrome, Jirau has overcome numerous obstacles to achieve her dreams and inspire others to do the same. Being diagnosed at an early age her mother was able to put her in therapies that would support her. Her natural ambition alongside a supporting family led her to take up sports such as basketball and synchronized swimming. Furthermore, she demonstrated a fondness for dressing up and modeling which would foreshadow her future career. Unfortunately, at age 17 she was diagnosed with Atrioventricular Canal Defect, a heart condition often associated with Down Syndrome. Thankfully, she had a successful surgery and was able to continue to live her ambitions.

Becoming the First Victoria Secret Model w/ Down Syndrome

 At just 23 years old, she has already made a significant impact in the fashion industry, becoming the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week in 2020.Since then, she has worked with major brands and designers, including Tommy Hilfiger and Nordstrom, and has been featured in numerous publications. Jirau’s unique look and infectious personality have earned her a massive following on social media, where she shares her daily life, modeling shots, and inspirational messages. Jirau is also an advocate for people with disabilities, using her platform to raise awareness and promote inclusion and diversity. Her advocacy work for people with disabilities has also earned her numerous accolades and awards, including the 2020 “Person of the Year” award from Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día. With her unwavering positivity and determination to break down barriers, Sofia Jirau is an inspiration to us all.

Overall, Sofia is an amazing example of how society is beginning to embrace people with down syndrome. Sofia is a role-model that proves that people with down syndrome are not confined to a limited number of professions. Furthermore, representation of people with down syndrome in popular media such as New York Fashion Week is critically important. Firstly, it shows hope for change that can motivate members of this group to continue fighting for representation. Secondly, it brings awareness that helps people better understand people who have Down Syndrome.
