WNBA Semifinals Heat Up: Lynx, Mercury, Aces, Fever All Tied

The 2025 WNBA Playoffs have officially reached their most intense stage, and the semifinals are already delivering the drama fans expected. With the new expanded format, a best-of-three first round, best-of-five semifinals, and, for the first time ever, a best-of-seven Finals, this postseason is set to be the longest and most competitive in league history.

Lynx vs. Mercury: A Battle of Grit
The top-seeded Minnesota Lynx and the Phoenix Mercury, the No. 4 seed, are tied 1-1 in their best-of-five series. Minnesota opened strong with a dominant 82-69 win in Game 1, looking every bit the powerhouse many predicted. But Phoenix responded in Game 2 with a stunning 89-83 overtime victory on the road, snatching home-court advantage away from the Lynx.
The Mercury’s Game 2 win was nothing short of spectacular. Down by as many as 20 points, Phoenix mounted an incredible comeback capped by Sami Whitcomb’s clutch three-pointer with just four seconds left to force overtime. From there, the Mercury outlasted Minnesota, sealing the win and sending the series to Phoenix tied. Now, with Game 3 set for Friday night in Phoenix, the Mercury have a chance to take control of the series on their home floor.

Aces vs. Fever: Heavyweights Trading Blows
In the other semifinal, the defending champion Las Vegas Aces and the Cinderella-story Indiana Fever are also tied at 1-1. The Fever shocked the league in Game 1 with a convincing 89-73 win in Las Vegas, silencing the crowd and proving they weren’t intimidated by the defending champs. But the Aces bounced back in Game 2 in dominant fashion, routing Indiana 90-68 to even the series.
The Fever, still playing without their star rookie Caitlin Clark after her season-ending injury, has relied on team balance and grit to make it this far. Their opening win showed they can go toe-to-toe with anyone. But the Aces, with their high-powered offense and depth, remain the favorites and reminded everyone why in Game 2. With Games 3 and 4 in Indiana, the Fever will look to recapture the magic and put the reigning champs on the ropes.
What’s Next?
Both series now shift to the lower seeds’ arenas, with crucial Game 3 matchups on Friday: Lynx at Mercury (9:30 p.m. ET) and Aces at Fever (7:30 p.m. ET). Game 4s follow on September 28, with potential decisive Game 5s scheduled for September 30 if needed.
The stakes are higher than ever, not just because of the expanded format but because of the Finals looming as a best-of-seven for the first time in WNBA history. The league’s evolution is giving fans more basketball and more opportunities for iconic moments.

The 2025 postseason is also shining a light on the league’s stars and storylines. The Lynx are chasing redemption after last year’s Finals loss, while the Mercury are fueled by their veteran leadership and newfound resilience. The Aces remain a juggernaut, but the Fever’s unexpected rise has captured fan attention nationwide.
Whether it’s Phoenix’s miraculous comeback, Indiana’s gutsy Game 1 upset, or the looming possibility of a seven-game Finals, one thing is clear: the WNBA playoffs have never been more thrilling.
Stay tuned, this ride is only getting started.
