These incredible athletes have overcome countless challenges and still showing the world how powerful and inspiring it is to have Latina and African American representation at the highest level of basketball. Their journey is one that’s reshaping the narrative for future generations of athletes.

We’re celebrating extraordinary Latina and African American athletes in college basketball and professional basketball. These women excel beyond the court—they’re trailblazers full of passion. For them, basketball has been about competing at the highest level in a space where their culture and identity were often overlooked. These athletes inspire their communities and fans around the world with their strength, leadership, and cultural pride, proving that they are just as skilled, determined, and worthy of a place in high-league basketball.

African American and Latina Cultural Heritage: A Source of Strength

After playing at the University of Maryland, she transferred to LSU, where she led the team to its first NCAA championship in 2023 and earned Most Outstanding Player honors. Angel’s legacy continues to grow as she partners with McDonald’s for the exclusive Angel Reese Special, featuring Aalyah Del Rosario, in their latest TV commercial, celebrating their greatness both on and off the court.

Aalyah Del Rosario, a 6-foot-6 center with Dominican roots, brings pride to her heritage as she makes her mark on the basketball court. Inspired by her family’s resilience and culture, Aalyah was a 5-star recruit and the top post player in her class. She also represented Team USA in the 2022 FIBA U18 Americas Championship, earning a gold medal. Along with Angel Reese, Aalyah uses her platform to advocate for self-expression, individuality, and empowerment, inspiring young athletes around the world.

Kamilla Cardoso is a dominant Brazilian center and a top prospect in the 2024 WNBA Draft, now playing for the Chicago Sky. Standing at 6’7″, she is known for her elite shot-blocking, rebounding, and interior scoring. A key player for South Carolina, she helped lead her team to an NCAA championship with her defensive prowess and strong post play. Cardoso’s size, skill, and presence in the paint make her a highly valued asset in the WNBA.

Esmery Martinez

Esmery Martinez, from Hato Mayor del Rey, Dominican Republic, made history as the first Dominican-born player drafted into the WNBA. Selected 17th overall by the New York Liberty in the 2024 Draft, Martinez previously transferred to the University of Arizona in 2022, where she averaged 10.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Her selection marks a significant milestone for Dominican athletes, showcasing her skill and dedication to the game.

Celeste Taylor

Celeste Taylor, a 5-foot-11 guard from Queens, New York, with Puerto Rican and Colombian heritage, was selected 15th overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Growing up in Valley Stream, she stayed connected to her Latino roots through Spanish practice with her grandparents and the vibrant rhythms of cumbia and bachata at family gatherings. Known for her high-energy play and relentless defense, Celeste inspires others to celebrate their heritage while pursuing excellence.
