Who is Peso Pluma, the Mexican Singer who Dethroned Bad Bunny on Spotify

At just 23 years of age, Peso Pluma has taken the Latino music industry by surprise. The Mexican singer has become a global success in the last couple of months, currently having four songs on Spotify’s Top 50- two in the Top 5- and being called the next Bad Bunny.

Who is Peso Pluma?

Born on June 15th, 1999, Peso Pluma’s real name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Lajia. Doble P, as he is also known, was born in Zapopan, in the state of Jalisco, although he grew up in Guadalajara. He is of Lebanese descent and has relatives in Badiraguato, Sinaloa.

Hassan worked as a waiter in New York and in the construction industry in Los Angeles, until he performed the song El Belicón with singer Rául Vega, and his fame began to rise.

His interest in music dates back to his teens. He started playing the guitar when he was in high school, under the musical influence of his family. He played songs by Ariel Camacho and sometime later he formed a musical group together with his cousins, which was called Tito Laija.

However, his professional debut didn’t come until 2020 when he released his Disco en Vivo in February of that year. Two months later he published his first studio album titled Ah y Qué?, both produced by the record label El Cartel de Los Ángeles.

A year later, he published his second album, Efectos Secundarios. However, his fame peaked in 2022, thanks to a collaboration he did with singer-songwriter Natanael Cano, who released an album in 2019 called Corridos Tumbados, the new musical genre that Peso Pluma was adopting.

Doble P is known for singing songs of corrido tumbado or corrido bélico, genres within regional Mexican music, mixing them with a touch of urban and reggaeton styles, which has fueled his fame worldwide.

He hasn’t released many songs yet. However, each one he has released has become a global success, such as “Ella Baila Sola,” “PRC,” “AMG,” “La Bebé remix,” and “El Azul.”He has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry, like Junior H, Becky G, Nicki Nicole, and Marshmello.

Last weekend, Peso Pluma took the Coachella stage during Becky G’s performance to sing their latest collaboration, Chanel, together, as well as his song with Natanael Cano, PCR.

Is Peso Pluma the next Bad Bunny?

Inevitably, the singer has been compared to the biggest name in the Latino music and reggaeton industry right now: Bad Bunny. Six years younger than Benito, Peso Pluma has been praised for taking a regional urban music genre to a global scale.

He recently even surpassed Bad Bunny to become the first Mexican artist to top the Daily Top Artists México list on Spotify, a spot which had been occupied by Benito for a very long time.

However, there was some controversy when the singer insulted Bad Bunny after receiving this achievement. During a concert, he stopped to thank his fans and said: “In all of fuc***ing Mexico, we are the first to have put a corrido in the top one, beating the as***ole Bad Bunny.” However, he later called him his idol and said he would love to collaborate on a song with him.

The end of any possible rivalry was made clear in Coachella after they both met. Bad Bunny was singing his song Callaita during his set when he started walking very close to the first rows of fans watching his show. He then stopped for a second, still singing, to greet Peso Pluma. Benito smiled and gave Hassan a hug before returning to the stage.
