Meet Oscar Maydon: The Newest Star of Narcocorridos Music

Who is Oscar Maydon?

Mexican music continues to birth excelent talent, following the steps Peso Pluma and Natanael Cano.

Meet Óscar Maydon, the maestro of narcocorridos who even gave the state of Baja California a run for its money. Born on September 20th, 1999, in Mexicali, the singer has been causing a stir in the music industry since his teenage years.

Oscar’s journey into the music world began when he was young, strumming away on his guitar at home. One of his first songs, “De la Nación,” hit the internet via YouTube in late 2020. Little did he know that this tune would catch the ear of none other than Jimmy Humilde, the mastermind behind “Rancho Humilde,” a record label that’s practically the heartbeat of regional Mexican music.

Oscar officially launched his career with his song “El Instagram,” which got a firm nod of approval from Rancho Humilde and planted his name in the corridos tumbados scene. January 2021 marked his live debut with the sensational group Legado 7, and from there, the only way was up. Maydon joined forces with Natanael Cano to drop “Ponte Exuberante,” which got over two million views in less than a month.

He has also teamed up with artists Panter Bélico, Junior H, and Fuerza Regida. Some of his most popular songs include “Anillos,” “Kilos de H,” “Los Collares,” the previously mentioned “Ponte Exuberante,” “Una Mentirosa,” “Polvito de Limón,” “Rompe La Dompe,” “Skin de Bandida” and “Fin de Semana,” his collaboration with Junior H.

While Oscar’s lyrics don’t necessarily name specific criminals, they take you on a ride through the narco-cultural world, touching on everything from synthetic drugs to firearms, relationships, luxury, and excesses. March 2022 marked a milestone for the young artist as he dropped his ten-track debut album, “GXLE3,” in collaboration with Rancho Humilde.

Fast forward to December 2023, he released his second album called “DISTORSIÓN,” which features collaborations with the likes of Natanael Cano, Gabito Ballesteros, Tyga, Chino Pacas and Codiciado, as well as Junior H. According to Spotify statistics, Óscar has more than 18.5 million monthly listeners, primarily concentrated in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Puebla.

Oscar’s Narcocorridos Veto

However, his success hasn’t come without sparking some controversy. A few months back, the mayor of Mexicali, Norma Alicia, claimed that Maydon had supposedly signed an agreement not to perform the “narcocorridos” at the Fiestas del Sol, but that agreement wasn’t honored. The young singer later refuted this, stating “We never signed a contract that said ‘Óscar Maydon is not going to sing corridos.’ That’s what we do, what are we going to sing to them?”

“We come to give a professional show wherever they hire us because they already know what we do, what kind of music we sing. People knew what kind of artist they were going to see (…) What bothers me is that they ban me from the city where I was born (…) You hired me and you banned me,” Maydon added.

Despite the backlash and censorship from authorities, Oscar has remained unapologetically himself and loyal to his fans, and his catchy, provocative lyrics reflect an artist who is certain to continue to make waves in the music industry in the years to come.
